The MLB draft is in full swing, but there was also action on the field on Monday. Both Yankees Dominican Summer League affiliates took the field for the first time in 2021, and both emerged victorious. Meanwhile, the FCL Yanks dropped their contest on a day off for Jasson Dominguez.
FCL Yankees (6-3): The Yanks lost their second in a row, this time to the Phillies by a 9-5 score.
- Star of the Game: Antonio Gomez – 2-for-4, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout, 2 pickoffs. Gomez had a nice day at the dish and also showed off his renowned arm, picking runners off both first and third base
- Alex Vargas: 1-for-2, 2 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 walks
- Madison Santos: 1-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 strikeout. Santos is hitting a healthy .417 and has been the Yanks’ most prominent offensive weapon thus far
- Roberto Chirinos: 1-for-3, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
- Juan Carela: 3 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
- Kenlly Montas: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
- Starling Perez: 2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
- Christian Sumoza: 1 IP, 5 H, 5 R (4 ER), 2 BB, 1 K
DSL Yankees 1 (1-0): The Yankees 1 traveled to the Twins complex and took care of business 9-0 in seven innings.
- Star of the Game: Enger Castellano – 2-for-3, 1 double, 3 RBI, 2 runs scored. The 18-year-old signed two years ago and made an impressive professional debut
- Felix Negueis: 2-for-2, 2 doubles, 1 RBI, 1 walk. Negueis hit .526 in five games in the DSL two years ago and quickly earned a promotion to the then-GCL. He’ll look for history to repeat itself in 2021
- Manuel Palencia: 1-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 strikeouts
- Yorlin Calderon: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. Calderon, a 19-year-old out of San Francisco de Macorís, struck out 17 in 16.1 innings two years ago in the DSL
- Nolberto Henriquez: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. Henriquez earned the win
- Ruben Castillo: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
DSL Yankees 2 (1-0): The other DSL outfit opened the season in stunning fashion with a combined no-hitter of Giants Orange in a 3-0 win.
- Star of the Game: The pitching staff – 9 combined IP, 0 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 10 K. Geremias Peguero, Riordan Oropeza (who earned the win), and Jose Guzman combined to shut down the Giants offense the whole day. Perhaps even more impressively, only Peguero had appeared in any professional games prior to today
- Ronny Rojas: 2-for-3, 1 double, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk. Rojas is looking to build on a four-homer campaign in the GCL two years ago
- Joel Mendez: 1-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
- Brenny Escanio: 2-for-3, 1 double, 1 strikeout. Escanio came to the Yankees as part of the J.P. Feyereisen trade with Milwaukee in September of 2019, when he was not yet 17 years of age
