Pinstriped Performances: Everything Old Is New Again

Some familiar faces graced the highlight reel on the last day of May. That was about the only positive as the affiliates went 0-3, with the Patriots taking Tuesday off after playing on Memorial Day.

Greg Bird (Mark LoMoglio)

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (18-30): Scranton gave up seven runs over the first two innings and could not recover, opening the week with a 7-3 loss over visiting Lehigh Valley in a game that featured a Didi Gregorius home run.

  • Star of the Game: Greg Bird – 2-for-4, 1 home run (5), 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, 2 strikeouts. Three erstwhile members of a young core who made their Yankees debuts in 2015 homered on Tuesday at various levels: Bird and Gregorius in this game, and Gary Sanchez for the Twins
  • Estevan Florial: 3-for-4, 1 walk, 1 strikeout. Florial was also caught stealing twice
  • Phillip Evans: 2-for-4, 1 RBI
  • Hayden Wesneski: 1.2 IP, 4 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, 38 pitches (21 strikes). Nothing reportedly wrong with Wesneski – just a dud of an outing. It happens
  • Michael Gomez: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K, 36 pitches (20 strikes)
  • Shane Greene: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 16 pitches (10 strikes)
  • Trevor Lane: 2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 27 pitches (21 strikes)
  • Shelby Miller: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 36 pitches (25 strikes)

Hudson Valley Renegades (20-25): The ‘Gades blew a 2-0 lead to fall to first-place Aberdeen 4-2.

  • Star of the Game: Everson Pereira – 1-for-2, 1 RBI, 1 walk. Pereira has hit just a single home run after racking up 20 last season, but he’s quietly put together a solid season in spite of the power outage, with a .378 OPS fueled by 24 walks. He had 28 free passes total in 2021
  • Trey Sweeney: 1-for-3, 1 strikeout, 2 stolen bases
  • Anthony Seigler: 0-for-2, 1 RBI, 2 walks, 1 strikeout
  • Blane Abeyta: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 5 BB, 0 K, 86 pitches (47 strikes). Abeyta’s five May starts featured an unsightly combination of 13 walks against just 14 strikeouts
  • Alex Mauricio: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 29 pitches (17 strikes)
  • Nelson L. Alvarez: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, 13 pitches (8 strikes)

Harold Cortijo (Robert M. Pimpsner)

Tampa Tarpons (20-26): The Tarpons were no-hit, and managed just four baserunners overall, in a rain-delayed, seven-inning 5-0 blanking at the hands of Fort Myers.

  • Star of the Game: Tyrone Yulie – 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 58 pitches (34 strikes). Yulie has allowed one earned run or fewer in three straight starts
  • Jasson Dominguez: 0-for-1, 2 walks, 1 strikeout
  • Harold Cortijo: 1.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R (4 ER), 1 BB, 3 K, 36 pitches (21 strikes). Cortijo took the loss to move to 1-1
  • Jack Neely: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 31 pitches (20 strikes)
