Pinstriped Performances: Holy Schmidt!

A big trade went down off the field, while on it, top prospect Clarke Schmidt finally made his 2021 MiLB debut.

Raimfer Salinas (Robert M. Pimpsner)

FCL Yankees (14-4): Remember when Clarke Schmidt was shut down for 3-4 weeks? That was in February. The Yankees downed Tigers West 4-3, but the biggest news by far was Schmidt’s return to the mound.

  • Star of the Game: Clarke Schmidt – 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. It’s just one rehab start at the rookie level, but Schmidt put up sparkling numbers in his first game back and should rise to the upper echelons of the system in due time
  • Kevin Alcantara: 1-for-4, 1 run scored, 2 strikeouts
  • Raimfer Salinas: 2-for-3, 1 double, 1 RBI, 2 runs scored. After scuffling out of the gate, Salinas is now 10 for his last 17 with a double, triple, and two home runs over that span
  • Ben Keizer: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
  • Juan Carela: 3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. Carela picked up his first win of the year

DSL Yankees 1 (3-7): The Yanks dropped their sixth in a row in tough fashion, blowing a two-run ninth inning lead and losing to the Angels 7-4.

  • Star of the Game: Hans Montero – 2-for-4, 1 double, 2 runs scored, 1 strikeout. The young shortstop is hitting .321 through the season’s first ten games
  • Enger Castellano: 1-for-4, 1 double, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 strikeouts
  • Christopher Familia: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 strikeout
  • Allen Facundo: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R (1 ER), 3 BB, 4 K
  • Pedro Rodriguez: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K. The 18-year-old from Venezuela has recovered with two scoreless outings since his tough season opener
  • Diego Cordero: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
  • Yordi Pichardo: 0.0 IP, 1 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
  • Ruben Castillo: 1 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K. Pichardo and Castillo combined to allow a five-spot in the top of the ninth

DSL Yankees 2 (7-3): Unlike their last-place brethren in the South Division, the Yanks’ other outfit has had no problem scoring buckets of runs and putting up Ws. On Monday, they easily defeated Pirates Gold 15-5.

  • Star of the Game: Mauro Bonifacio – 3-for-5, 2 home runs (4), 4 RBI, 4 runs scored. Bonifacio, just 19 years of age and coming off a tough rookie campaign two seasons ago, is slugging a robust .639 and has as many homers in nine games as he had in 42 games in 2019
  • Daury Arias: 1-for-4, 1 home run (3), 4 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout. Arias blew open a game that was already likely out of reach with a grand slam in the seventh inning
  • Dayro Perez: 1-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 strikeouts
  • Jesus Rodriguez: 3-for-3, 1 double, 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 walk
  • Miguel Torres: 1-for-2, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 walk
  • Henry Lalane: 2 IP, 3 H, 5 R (4 ER), 4 BB, 4 K
  • Kevin Aparicio: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K. A well-deserved win in relief for Aparicio, his third of the season
  • Daniel Calderon: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
