Pinstriped Performances: ‘Riders On The Storm

Thursday saw four of five teams (not counting intra-squad opponents) take home wins, with Scranton in particular showing some fight after a very difficult year to this point.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (33-42): The RailRiders look set to make a real go of it in the second half of the season – they dominated Buffalo 8-1 for their fourth straight win.

  • Star of the Game: Armando Alvarez – 3-for-3, 1 home run (8), 2 doubles, 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 walk, 1 stolen base. Alvarez’s three extra-base hits lifted his slugging percentage to .540, after it was sitting at .382 just three weeks ago
  • Estevan Florial: 1-for-3, 1 double, 2 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout, 1 stolen base. Florial has extra-base hits in three consecutive games
  • Jake Bauers: 2-for-4, 1 home run (4), 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 stolen base
  • Clarke Schmidt: 2.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 43 pitches (29 strikes)
  • Vinny Nittoli: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 27 pitches (20 strikes). Nittoli earned the win and is 3-1 on the season
  • Michael Gomez: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K, 45 pitches (26 strikes)
  • Jose Mujica: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 29 pitches (19 strikes)

Somerset Patriots (45-27): A big eighth and ninth helped Somerset arrest their slide and defeat Reading 6-2.

  • Star of the Game: Randy Vasquez – 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 79 pitches (52 strikes). Vasquez was unlucky not to get a win in this one, and broke a streak of three straight starts in which he allowed a home run
  • Anthony Volpe: 2-for-5, 1 double, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, 2 strikeouts, 2 stolen bases. Volpe wrapped up a barnstorming month in which he slashed .293/.358/.535 with five homers and 10 stolen bases
  • Jeisson Rosario: 2-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
  • Chad Bell: 3-for-4, 1 home run (8), 1 RBI, 2 runs scored. Bell’s fifth-inning solo shot put the Patriots on the board
  • Steven Jennings: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, 11 pitches (7 strikes). Jennings got the win
  • Carson Coleman: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 17 pitches (9 strikes)

Hudson Valley Renegades (36-36): Back to .500 they go. The Renegades managed just three hits, with two of them coming in the final inning, as they lost to Brooklyn 6-1.

  • Star of the Game: Carlos Gomez – 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 37 pitches (19 strikes). Gomez hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last four appearances
  • Cooper Bowman: 1-for-4, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts
  • Anthony Seigler: 0-for-3, 1 run scored, 2 walks, 1 stolen base
  • Aaron Palensky: 1-for-3, 1 double, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
  • Blas Castano: 6 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 94 pitches (62 strikes). Castano took his sixth loss of the season
  • Leif Strom: 0.0 IP, 0 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 0 K, 20 pitches (4 strikes)
  • Nelvin Correa: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 13 pitches (8 strikes)

Tampa Tarpons (32-40): The Tarpons generated all of their offense via a couple of homers in a 5-3 defeat of Bradenton.

  • Star of the Game: Austin Wells – 1-for-4, 1 home run (2), 3 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 strikeouts. Wells continues to progress in working his way back from an injury, and it shouldn’t be long before he’s back at High-A
  • Jasson Dominguez: 1-for-2, 2 runs scored, 2 walks, 1 stolen base
  • Anthony Garcia: 1-for-3, 1 home run (11), 2 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout, 1 stolen base. Garcia’s two-run blast in the eighth provided the Tarpons’ margin of victory, and tied him with Marcos Cabrera for the team lead
  • Juan Carela: 4 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 7 K, 82 pitches (44 strikes). Carela set a season high for walks
  • Ryan Anderson: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 20 pitches (11 strikes)
  • Bailey Dees: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 44 pitches (27 strikes). Dees got the win, and has recorded three straight scoreless appearances of at least two innings
  • Gerrit van Zijll: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, 3 pitches (3 strikes). Van Zijll came on for one batter to get his first professional save

FCL Yankees (12-6): Four home runs lifted the Yanks to an 8-4 win over the Blue Jays.

  • Star of the Game: Jared Serna – 2-for-4, 1 home run (3), 1 double, 3 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk. Serna has a .986 OPS and seven extra-base hits to start off his career stateside
  • Agustin Ramirez: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
  • Jesus Rodriguez: 1-for-4, 1 home run (2), 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
  • Alex Guerrero: 1-for-2, 1 home run (2), 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 walks, 1 strikeout. Guerrero has homered in the last two games in which he’s played
  • Kelvin Espino: 2-for-4, 1 home run (3), 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, 2 strikeouts
  • Joel Valdez: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
  • Yorlin Calderon: 4 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K. Calderon has a 4-0 record and a 3.20 ERA
  • Ocean Gabonia: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. Gabonia earned his first pro save

DSL Yankees (7-12) and DSL Bombers (11-8): The Yanks and Bombers began facing off for an intra-squad game, but it was cut short by rain in the fourth inning with the Yankees leading 2-0. The teams will resume the action on Saturday.
