Pinstriped Performances: Semple, Three Homers Pace ‘Gades

Some rain-shortened action and an intrasquad game in the DSL punctuated a Saturday on which the big-league Yankees finally broke through against the Red Sox.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (41-21): Scranton’s game in Worcester was suspended due to rain in the top of the second. They’ll complete the contest tomorrow.

Somerset Patriots (40-24): Rain cut the Patriots’ game in Richmond to six innings. They lost 7-3 after jumping out to a 3-0 lead early.

  • Star of the Game: Max Burt – 2-for-3, 1 home run (3), 1 RBI, 1 run scored. Burt’s solo shot in the second gave Somerset their biggest lead of the night
  • Diego Castillo: 1-for-2, 1 run scored, 2 walks
  • Oswaldo Cabrera: 1-for-3, 1 double, 1 RBI, 1 run scored
  • Michael Beltre: 1-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 strikeout
  • Hayden Wesneski: 5 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 76 pitches (49 strikes). Wesneski served up a whopping four home runs and has pitched to an unsightly 7.56 ERA with Somerset
  • Kevin Gadea: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, 13 pitches (7 strikes)

Hudson Valley Renegades (42-23): Though not quite as dramatic as last night, the Renegades scored five of their six runs in the last three innings and again held off a ninth-inning rally in defeating Wilmington 6-5.

  • Star of the Game: Shawn Semple – 7 IP, 7 H, 3 R (2 ER), 0 BB, 9 K, 97 pitches (73 strikes). Semple has dominated since moving down a level, with a 2.48 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 36.1 innings
  • Anthony Volpe: 1-for-4, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
  • Anthony Seigler: 1-for-5, 1 home run (2), 3 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 strikeouts. Seigler’s three-run blast in the seventh pulled HV from a 3-2 hole to a 5-3 advantage
  • Chad Bell: 1-for-4, 1 home run (5), 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 strikeouts. Bell’s solo shot in the eighth provided an ultimately crucial insurance run
  • Pat DeMarco: 2-for-4, 1 home run (1), 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, 2 strikeouts. DeMarco went yard for the first time in just his fourth game at High-A
  • Derek Craft: 2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 29 pitches (20 strikes). Despite surrendering a pair of runs, Craft emerged with a save

Tampa Tarpons (44-20): The Tarpons have had Lakeland’s number most of the year, but on Saturday they fell 10-3.

  • Star of the Game: Trevor Hauver: 2-for-4, 1 home run (8), 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout. Hauver’s July resurgence has been impressive. He’s hitting .375 and slugging .589 this month
  • Austin Wells: 1-for-4, 1 triple, 1 run scored, 3 strikeouts
  • Andres Chaparro: 1-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk
  • Aldenis Sanchez: 2-for-4, 1 double, 1 strikeout
  • Jhonatan Munoz: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 52 pitches (33 strikes)
  • Wellington Diaz: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 29 pitches (16 strikes)
  • Michael Giacone: 2.1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 45 pitches (28 strikes)
  • Enrique Santana: 2.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 30 pitches (19 strikes)

FCL Yankees (9-4): The Yanks pounded the Phillies 11-0.

  • Star of the Game: Nelson Gomez – 3-for-3, 1 home run (1), 1 double, 3 RBI, 3 runs scored. The 23-year-old was making just his second appearance of the season after spending 2019 with Charleston at Low-A
  • Pitching Star of the Game: Blas Castano – 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K. The 22-year-old put on a show on Saturday, with eight out of his nine strikeouts recorded swinging
  • Antonio Gomez: 1-for-2, 1 double, 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, 2 walks, 1 strikeout
  • Raimfer Salinas: 1-for-3, 2 runs scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
  • D’Vaughn Knowles: 1-for-4, 1 triple, 2 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
  • Denny Larrondo: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. Larrondo got the win to move to 2-0 on the season
  • Josue Panacual: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

DSL Yankees 1 (3-2) and DSL Yankees 2 (4-1): The two DSL affiliates played each other on Saturday, with the second team defeating the first team 10-9.

  • Star of the Game: Mauro Bonifacio – 2-for-4, 2 home runs (2), 3 RBI, 2 runs scored, 2 strikeouts. The 19-year-old hit four home runs in 42 games in the DSL two years ago. He hit half that many in a single day to pace the second team
  • Joel Mendez: 2-for-4, 1 home run (3), 3 RBI, 2 runs scored, 2 strikeouts. Mendez sports a gaudy .889 slugging percentage
  • Ronny Rojas: 2-for-4, 1 double, 2 RBI
  • Felix Negueis: 1-for-3, 2 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts
  • Willy Montero: 1-for-3, 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
  • Luis Arejula: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 3 K
  • Jose Guzman: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
