Pinstriped Performances: Seven-Game Saturday

Somerset and Tampa took home doubleheader sweeps on a busy Saturday of baseball around the Yankees organization.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (18-9): The only affiliate to play just one game on Saturday, Scranton dropped its second in a row to Lehigh Valley by a score of 9-6.

  • Star of the Game: Hoy Jun Park – 1-for-4, 1 home run (4), 3 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout. Park has homered twice in his last three games
  • Estevan Florial: 1-for-4, 2 runs scored, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts
  • Greg Allen: 1-for-3, 1 double, 1 run scored. Allen returned to the lineup for the first time since May 14
  • Trey Amburgey: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
  • Brody Koerner: 5 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 89 pitches (53 strikes)
  • Adam Warren: 2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 29 pitches (18 strikes)
  • Sal Romano: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 27 pitches (17 strikes)

Somerset Patriots (20-8): Zack Britton’s second rehab outing in his road back to the Bronx coincided with Somerset’s authoritative sweep of bottom-dwelling Reading by scores of 7-2 and 6-1.

Game 1

  • Star of the Game: Aaron Palensky – 1-for-3, 1 home run (1), 2 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout. Palensky’s dream debut continued as he hit his first professional home run and boosted his OPS to 1.069
  • Diego Castillo: 3-for-4, 2 doubles, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
  • Dermis Garcia: 1-for-3, 1 home run (10), 2 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout. Garcia’s first-inning bomb added to his system-leading total
  • Oliver Dunn: 1-for-3, 1 home run (2), 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 strikeouts. Dunn has cooled off as of late and hit his first home run since May 20
  • Max Burt: 1-for-2, 1 double, 2 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk
  • Shawn Semple: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 74 pitches (45 strikes)
  • Zack Britton: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 18 pitches (13 strikes). A much cleaner second rehab appearance for Britton, who inches closer to a return to New York
  • Stephen Ridings: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, 12 pitches (7 strikes). Ridings has now thrown 9.2 innings this year without allowing an earned run

Game 2

  • Star of the Game: Matt Krook – 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K, 75 pitches (45 strikes). Krook added five innings of no-hit ball to a career season in which he’s struck out 35 and walked nine in six starts
  • Michael Beltre: 2-for-3, 1 triple, 2 RBI, 1 strikeout. Beltre continued his torrid hitting with his fourth triple and 13th extra-base hit
  • Dermis Garcia: 0-for-3, 1 strikeout
  • Jason Lopez: 1-for-3, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
  • Oliver Dunn: 1-for-3, 1 double, 3 RBI, 1 run scored
  • Michael Gomez: 2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 38 pitches (22 strikes)

Hudson Valley Renegades (15-12): Ken Waldichuk, the unquestioned ace in a stable of high quality pitching at Dutchess Stadium, lifted his squad in Game 1 of a doubleheader 4-0 before the Renegades dropped the nightcap 7-5.

Game 1

  • Star of the Game: Ken Waldichuk: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K, 74 pitches (52 strikes). Waldichuk has made six starts in 2021 without allowing a run, and carries a whopping 45:10 strikeout to walk ratio through 24.2 innings. Give this man a promotion
  • Oswald Peraza: 2-for-4, 1 double, 2 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 stolen base. Peraza continues his tour de force atop the HV lineup, boosting his average to .308 and adding his 16th stolen base
  • Eric Wagaman: 2-for-3, 1 double
  • Josh Breaux: 1-for-3, 1 double, 1 RBI, 1 strikeout
  • Eduardo Torrealba: 1-for-3, 1 run scored, 1 stolen base
  • Zach Greene: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 26 pitches (16 strikes)

Game 2

  • Star of the Game: Ezequiel Duran – 3-for-3, 1 home run (4), 1 RBI, 2 runs scored. The Peraza/Duran combo at the top of the Renegades’ order has been electric for most of the season – Duran’s now hitting .314
  • Oswald Peraza: 1-for-2, 1 double, 2 runs scored, 1 walk
  • Eric Wagaman: 2-for-4, 1 triple, 1 double, 1 RBI, 1 strikeout
  • Frederick Cuevas: 1-for-2, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 walk
  • Josh Maciejewski: 3 IP, 7 H, 5 R (4 ER), 1 BB, 1 K, 55 pitches (37 strikes)
  • Mitch Spence: 3 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 43 pitches (29 strikes)

Tampa Tarpons (20-8): Saturday was all about the big inning for the Tarpons. A nine-run fifth in the first game led to a 12-3 win, and Tampa also took the nightcap 7-4 thanks to a six-run fourth.

Game 1

  • Star of the Game: Austin Wells – 3-for-3, 1 triple, 3 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 walk, 1 stolen base. Wells posted a three-hit game for the third time in this up-and-down season for the prized rookie
  • Pitching Star of the Game: Randy Vasquez – 4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R (0 ER), 1 BB, 8 K, 69 pitches (49 strikes). After getting shelled his last time out there, the 22-year-old showed tremendous fortitude in his dazzling performance on Saturday
  • Josh Smith: 2-for-4, 1 home run (4), 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 stolen base. Though Tampa has had no issues scoring runs, the 2019 second-round pick has established himself as an offensive threat at the top of the order in just nine games
  • Anthony Volpe: 2-for-2, 1 double, 2 runs scored, 2 walks, 1 stolen base. Volpe is heating up at the perfect time and also added to his team-leading stolen base total with his 14th
  • Trevor Hauver: 1-for-4, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
  • Jake Sanford: 2-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
  • Juan De Leon: 1-for-3, 1 home run (1), 4 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 strikeouts. De Leon’s first blast of the year was a grand slam that broke the game open as part of the nine-run fifth inning
  • Jhonatan Munoz: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, 5 pitches (2 strikes). For recording one out in relief of Vasquez, Munoz got himself a win
  • Zach Kohn: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 24 pitches (13 strikes)
  • Carson Coleman: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 16 pitches (11 strikes)

Game 2

  • Star of the Game: Josh Smith – 2-for-4, 2 home runs (6), 3 RBI, 2 runs scored. Smith followed his teammate Volpe, who had a three-homer day in a doubleheader earlier this week, with one of his own. He’s slugging .833 through ten games of a downright incredible full-season ball debut
  • Anthony Volpe: 1-for-3, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
  • Trevor Hauver: 1-for-4, 1 double
  • Elijah Dunham: 2-for-2, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 walk
  • Carlos Narvaez: 1-for-2, 1 double, 2 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
  • Juan De Leon: 1-for-3, 1 home run (2), 2 RBI, 1 run scored. De Leon joined Smith in homering in both legs of the twin bill
  • Matt Sauer: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R (1 ER), 4 BB, 4 K, 79 pitches (48 strikes)
  • Michael Giacone: 3.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 45 pitches (31 strikes)
