Pinstriped Performances: Tarpons Sweep Holiday Twin Bill

Tampa pitching silenced the Hammerheads and closed out a strong week, while Somerset blanked Harrisburg again and Scranton lost its first series of the season.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (34-16): It’s said that all good things must come to an end. The RailRiders finally ended up on the losing side of a series, dropping the Sunday finale to Worcester 5-4 despite a frantic comeback to complete a 2-3 week.

  • Star of the Game: Andrew Velazquez – 2-for-2, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 walks. Velazquez drove in the first Scranton run in the first inning and posted a perfect OBP for the night
  • Estevan Florial: 1-for-3, 1 run scored, 2 walks
  • Hoy Jun Park: 0-for-3, 1 run scored, 2 walks, 1 strikeout. Park extended his on-base streak to 28 games
  • Ryan LaMarre: 1-for-4, 1 RBI, 2 strikeouts
  • Armando Alvarez: 1-for-5, 1 double, 1 run scored, 2 strikeouts
  • Asher Wojciechowski: 3.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 46 pitches (32 strikes)
  • Brooks Kriske: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 27 pitches (18 strikes)
  • Trevor Lane: 1.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 28 pitches (20 strikes)
  • Greg Weissert: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, 12 pitches (8 strikes)
  • Sal Romano: 1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 22 pitches (14 strikes)

Somerset Patriots (35-18): A brilliant outing from Luis Medina fueled the Patriots’ second straight shutout, this time by a slimmer 3-0 margin.

  • Star of the Game: Luis Medina – 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K, 90 pitches (60 strikes). Medina’s first three starts at Double-A had been up and down, but he finally put it all together for a signature performance in start number four
  • Oswald Peraza: 3-for-4, 1 RBI
  • Donny Sands: 2-for-4
  • Michael Beltre: 1-for-4, 1 home run (9), 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout. Beltre has homered on consecutive days
  • Isiah Gilliam: 1-for-4, 1 home run (2), 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 strikeouts. Gilliam hadn’t gone yard since May 29
  • Nick Green: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 15 pitches (8 strikes)
  • Michael Gomez: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 15 pitches (9 strikes)
  • Ron Marinaccio: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 31 pitches (20 strikes)

Hudson Valley Renegades (34-19): After falling behind 3-2, the Renegades scored three times in the fifth and twice in the ninth to pull away from Jersey Shore 7-3 and cap a 4-2 week.

  • Star of the Game: Elijah Dunham – 2-for-4, 1 home run (3), 1 double, 2 RBI, 1 run scored. More known for his speed than his power, Dunham’s fifth-inning two-run blast gave HV its first lead of the night
  • Josh Smith: 2-for-5, 1 double, 1 run scored, 2 strikeouts
  • Ezequiel Duran: 2-for-5, 3 RBI, 2 strikeouts. Duran’s two-run single in the ninth tacked on a couple of important insurance runs
  • Brandon Lockridge: 2-for-5, 1 home run (3), 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 strikeout. Lockridge went deep in the second inning
  • Shawn Semple: 6 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 89 pitches (59 strikes). Semple earned the win and carries a strong 1.88 ERA in High-A
  • Nelson L. Alvarez: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, 17 pitches (8 strikes)
  • Nick Ernst: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 37 pitches (24 strikes). For his multi-inning relief effort, Ernst picked up his third save this year

Tampa Tarpons (36-16): In both games against Jupiter, the Tarpons fell behind 1-0. And in both games, they rattled off enough unanswered runs to take the win. They triumphed narrowly 2-1 in the opener before taking home a 5-1 win in the later game.

Game 1

  • Star of the Game: Edgar Barclay – 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K, 30 pitches (21 strikes). Barclay did what he’s been doing all year: enter a close game in a long-relief role and shut things down for as long as necessary
  • Anthony Volpe: 0-for-3, 1 strikeout
  • Carlos Narvaez: 1-for-3, 1 RBI
  • Pat DeMarco: 2-for-3, 1 run scored
  • Jesus Bastidas: 1-for-3, 1 RBI
  • Beck Way: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 38 pitches (25 strikes)
  • Wellington Diaz: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 12 pitches (9 strikes). Diaz earned his first win of the year
  • Nelvin Correa: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 13 pitches (11 strikes). Despite a nervy seventh, Correa maintained his strong stats and picked up his fourth save

Game 2

  • Stars of the Game: Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells – identical lines of 1-for-2, 1 home run (11 for Volpe, 6 for Wells), 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk. Volpe and Wells hit back-to-back solo shots as part of a five-run sixth inning that saw Tampa pull away
  • Trevor Hauver: 1-for-3, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
  • Jake Sanford: 2-for-3, 1 double, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
  • Andres Chaparro: 1-for-3, 1 double, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
  • Jhonatan Munoz: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K, 24 pitches (15 strikes)
  • Ryan Anderson: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 33 pitches (17 strikes)
  • Michael Giacone: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 12 pitches (10 strikes)
  • Enrique Santana: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, 15 pitches (7 strikes). Santana emerged with his first win in just his third appearance
  • Sean Boyle: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 16 pitches (11 strikes)
