Pinstriped Performances: The Comeback Kids

What looked like it might be a hangover game coming off a big series for Somerset turned out to be anything but, and the Tarpons pitching staff continued to shine.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (9-15): Nothing is going right for the RailRiders, who couldn’t muster up any offense to back Hayden Wesneski and fell to Rochester, 2-0.

  • Star of the Game: Hayden Wesneski – 5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 80 pitches (56 strikes). Wesneski has struck out 26 and walked just five in his five starts
  • Oswald Peraza: 1-for-4, 1 double
  • Armando Alvarez: 1-for-3, 1 double
  • Michael Gomez: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 26 pitches (14 strikes)
  • Braden Bristo: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 18 pitches (12 strikes)

Somerset Patriots (15-7): Down 5-0 after an inning and a half, the Patriots stormed back to score eight unanswered, then held off a late Fisher Cats rally to steal an 8-7 win.

  • Star of the Game: Michael Beltre – 1-for-3, 1 home run (2), 4 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 walk. Beltre’s second-inning grand slam erased most of the early deficit and completely changed the tenor of the ballgame
  • Anthony Volpe: 0-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts
  • Mickey Gasper: 2-for-4, 1 double, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
  • Jesus Bastidas: 1-for-4, 1 double, 1 RBI, 1 run scored
  • Mitch Spence: 4 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 82 pitches (55 strikes). The long ball proved Spence’s undoing in this one. He allowed two home runs, his first two since his opening start
  • Barrett Loseke: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 45 pitches (28 strikes). Loseke took home a win, bringing his record to 4-0
  • Nick Ernst: 2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 27 pitches (21 strikes). Despite giving up two runs in the ninth, Ernst was assessed the save

Austin Wells (Robert M Pimpsner/Pinstriped Prospects)

Hudson Valley Renegades (12-10): Another home run off the bat of Austin Wells wasn’t enough to avoid a 5-3 loss to the BlueClaws.

  • Star of the Game: Austin Wells – 2-for-4, 1 home run (5), 1 double, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored. Wells is up to .323 on the season with homers in two straight games and four of six
  • Trey Sweeney: 1-for-4, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts
  • Tyler Hardman: 1-for-4, 1 RBI
  • Matt Sauer: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 78 pitches (60 strikes). This was Sauer’s longest outing of the season
  • Nelvin Correa: 2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 41 pitches (30 strikes)

Tyrone Yulie (John Brophy/Pinstriped Prospects)

Tampa Tarpons (10-11): Tyrone Yulie and a parade of reliever shut down Bradenton en route to a 4-1 series-opening win.

  • Star of the Game: Tyrone Yulie – 5 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 72 pitches (43 strikes). The 20-year-old flamethrower completed five innings for just the second time in his professional career and the first time in 2022
  • Jasson Dominguez: 1-for-4, 1 double, 2 runs scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
  • Marcos Cabrera: 2-for-4, 1 double, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts
  • Grant Richardson: 1-for-4, 1 double, 2 RBI, 2 strikeouts
  • Enrique Santana: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 31 pitches (17 strikes)
  • Harold Cortijo: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 20 pitches (14 strikes)
  • Ryan Anderson: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 17 pitches (10 strikes)
  • Carlos Gomez: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K, 19 pitches (13 strikes). Gomez struck out the side in the ninth for his second save
