Pinstriped Performances: Twelve Innings, One Hit

Up in the Valley, another strong outing from Randy Vasquez was overshadowed by an offensive performance so bad that it was almost spectacular. Elsewhere, fans in Tampa got to see a milestone for this year’s first round pick, and Scranton walked off winners.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (51-33): Taking a page out of the parent club’s book, Scranton walked off on a wild pitch in a 6-5 win over Lehigh Valley.

  • Star of the Game: Chris Gittens – 1-for-4, 1 home run (8), 3 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts. Gittens reversed the course of the ballgame with a three-run bomb that put the RailRiders up by two
  • Greg Allen: 0-for-3, 2 walks, 3 runs scored, 1 strikeout. Allen scored the winning run on Cam Bedrosian’s wild pitch in the 10th inning
  • Kyle Holder: 2-for-4, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
  • JP Sears. 3 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 86 pitches (58 strikes)
  • Reggie McClain: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 15 pitches (11 strikes)
  • Kevin Gadea: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R (0 ER), 1 BB, 2 K, 40 pitches (23 strikes). Gadea hasn’t allowed an earned run through his first two career appearances in Triple-A
  • Nick Green: 1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 30 pitches (18 strikes)
  • Greg Weissert: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 31 pitches (19 strikes). Weissert was a deserving game winner after surviving the top of the 10th with the ghost runner unscathed

Somerset Patriots (53-35): It was a night for JB’s at TD Ballpark, as a gem from Jhony Brito and a homer from Josh Breaux helped the Patriots to a 6-2 win over red-hot Portland.

  • Star of the Game: Josh Breaux – 1-for-4, 1 home run (2), 3 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 strikeouts. Breaux’s home run to center in the bottom of the seventh gave Somerset three valuable insurance runs
  • Pitching Star of the Game: Jhony Brito – 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R (0 ER), 1 BB, 7 K, 96 pitches (71 strikes). Brito has been simply dominant since coming up to Double-A, with 18 strikeouts through three starts
  • Brandon Lockridge: 2-for-3, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
  • Clint Frazier: 1-for-3, 1 strikeout
  • Thomas Milone: 1-for-1, 1 double, 2 RBI, 1 run scored. Milone’s two-run double after coming in for the rehabbing Frazier turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead
  • Michael Beltre: 3-for-4, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout, 1 stolen base
  • Chad Bell: 1-for-4, 1 RBI
  • Michael Gomez: 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

Hudson Valley Renegades (55-34): The Renegades were no-hit on Saturday, except that at the end of nine innings, the game was knotted at zero. Elijah Dunham singled in the tenth but the ‘Gades couldn’t score, and two runs came around for Jersey Shore in the 12th for a 2-0 BlueClaws win.

  • Star of the Game: Randy Vasquez – 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K, 88 pitches (58 strikes). Vasquez has had an unbelievable run since joining Hudson Valley, posting a 2.10 ERA with 45 strikeouts and just seven walks through his first 30 High-A innings
  • Anthony Volpe: 0-for-4, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts, 1 stolen base
  • Everson Pereira: 0-for-5, 2 strikeouts
  • Elijah Dunham: 1-for-5, 3 strikeouts
  • Freicer Perez: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K, 38 pitches (17 strikes)
  • Nelvin Correa: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R (1 ER), 0 BB, 2 K, 32 pitches (22 strikes)
  • Matt Minnick: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 7 pitches (6 strikes)

Tampa Tarpons (59-27): Trey Sweeney notched his first full-season home run as Tampa downed the Threshers 4-3.

  • Star of the Game: Trey Sweeney – 1-for-4, 1 home run (1), 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout. Sweeney went deep as the second Tampa hitter to come to the plate in the first inning
  • Jasson Dominguez: 0-for-4, 3 strikeouts
  • Benjamin Cowles: 1-for-2, 1 home run (1), 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, 2 walks, 1 strikeout. Cowles also opened his Tampa account on Saturday and is hitting .273 in Low-A thus far
  • Nicio Rodriguez: 4 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 56 pitches (35 strikes)
  • Blas Castano: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 55 pitches (34 strikes). Castano earned his second win for some solid long relief
  • Enrique Santana: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 13 pitches (7 strikes). Santana picked up his first save of the year

FCL Yankees (20-9): The Yanks couldn’t dig their way out of an early hole and lost to the Blue Jays 6-4.

  • Star of the Game: Kyle Battle – 3-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 strikeout, 1 stolen base. The non-drafted signee is 5-for-21 in his pro career 
  • Anthony Garcia: 1-for-5, 1 strikeout
  • Mickey Gasper: 1-for-1, 1 RBI, 1 walk
  • Angel Rojas: 1-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
  • Sincere Smith: 2-for-4, 2 strikeouts
  • Zach Kohn: 0.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
  • Denny Larrondo: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. All five of Larrondo’s outs came via strikeout, and the 19-year-old has 19 strikeouts through 13.1 innings in total
  • Luis Velasquez: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
  • Starling Perez: 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R (1 ER), 2 BB, 4 K
  • Kevin Milam: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
  • Christian Sumoza: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
