In the words of Bruce Buffer… ITS TIME!! Minor League Baseball Opening Day is here, and the Yankees have several big names slated to start their seasons and a couple of new affiliates.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders at Syracuse Mets
After being released by the Mets in March the Yankees signed Mike Montgomery on April 6 and he will be making his 2021 debut as the Opening Day starter for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. Montgomery appeared in three games for the Kansas City Royals in 2020 throwing just 5 1/3 innings allowing three runs for a 5.06 ERA. Over 183 career major league games, 70 starts, he has a 3.84 ERA with 415 strikeouts over 541 innings.
Harrisburg Senators at Somerset Patriots
LHP Tim Cate vs RHP Luis Gil
Right-handed Pitcher Luis Gil is making his Double-A debut as the Opening Day starter for the Somerset Patriots in 2021. In 2019 he was one of the more impressive starters posting a 2.72 ERA over 20 starts for the Charleston RiverDogs and the Tampa Tarpons with 123 strikeouts over 96 innings of work.
Hudson Valley Renegades at Jersey Shore Blue Claws
RHP Luis Medina vs RHP Ben Brown
Not to be outdone on the mound, the Hudson Valley Renegades will be sending Luis Medina out to open the 2021 season against the Jersey Shore Blue Claws. Medina has looking to build off the strong second half of the 2019 season and the strong showing he had in the Puerto Rican Winter League. If he can show his command is for real in 2021 he will likely move quickly through the system.
Dunedin Blue Jays vs Tampa Tarpons
TBA vs RHP Matt Sauer
Right-handed pitcher Matt Sauer will be returning to the mound for the first time since April 11, 2019, and undergoing Tommy John Surgery. The former second-round pick owns a career 3.92 ERA over 21 starts. He had allowed just two runs over 8 2/3 innings before being shut down in 2019.
