The Yankees drafted right-handed pitcher Glenn Otto in the fifth round of the 2017 draft. Otto was the 152nd overall pick out of Rice. Prior to the draft he was ranked by MLBPipeline.com as the 96th best prospect in the draft, but fell to the Yankees at 152 due to injury concerns.
Over his college career at Rice he owns an 18-6 record with a 2.62 ERA over 82 games, 4 starts, striking out 222 batters over 172 innings. He currently tied for fourth in Rice’s all-time saves leaders with 17 saves.
Otto made his professional debut in 2017 with the Gulf Coast League Yankees East on July 12. He pitched two shutout innings striking out three batters and allowing a hit. He appeared in one game for the GCL West squad where he struck out two in an inning before being promoted to the Staten Island Yankees on July 20.
With the Staten Island Yankees, he appeared in seven games in the regular season, with two of them being starts. He struck out 25 batters in 17 innings pitched while walking five and allowing 12 hits. His best game came on August 5 when he pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing a hit and striking out five. On August 20, Otto, Trevor Stephan, and Josh Roeder combined for 8 1/3 hitless innings of work.
Otto made one appearance in the postseason allowing two hits and striking out three in 2 2/3 innings pitched against the Hudson Valley Renegades on September 10.
