Corner infielder Mandy Alvarez was selected by the New York Yankees in the 17th round of the 2016 MLB Amateur Draft out of Eastern Kentucky University.
He was part of the same draft class as Blake Rutherford, Nick Solak, and Nolan Martinez.
2016
Alvarez was sent to the Staten Island Yankees of the Class A short-season New York-Penn League. Alvarez got off to a great start in 13 games posting a slash line of .339/.364/.407 with four doubles and 11 RBI and earned a hit in each game. That quick start earned him a promotion to the Charleston RiverDogs of the Class A South Atlantic League.
With the RiverDogs, Alvarez continued his hot start. He continued his streak and ended up reaching base in 12 straight games, extending his overall streak to 25. He collected a hit in his first nine games with Charleston to start off his career with a 22 game hitting streak. In 53 games with the RiverDogs, he slashed .274/.289/.404 with 12 doubles and five home runs, driving in 29.
Alvarez played third base exclusively between Staten Island and Charleston.
2017
The Yankees promoted Alvarez to the Class A Advanced Tampa Yankees of the Florida State League to start the season. In 41 games, Alvarez struggled to a .228/.248/.275 slash line with five doubles and one triple.
The Yankees sent Alvarez down to the Class A Charleston RiverDogs on June 4. His offense picked up again where he slashed .261/.310/.328 collecting eight doubles and driving in 11 runs in 35 games. Alvarez’s season would be cut short though with a stress fracture in his left foot and was placed on the disabled list for the rest of the season on July 24.
Alvarez split his time in the field between third base and first base in Tampa and Charleston.
