RailRiders Outslug Red Wings in Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY – On a night that saw the two teams combine for eight home runs, the SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/ New York Yankees) stood tall in a 12-7 win over the Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field. The RailRiders (75-44) have won eight of their last nine and three-of-four against the Red Wings (66-54).

The offense backed starter Brady Lail (6-3), who surrendered a Triple-A career-worst six earned runs over six innings. Lail allowed five hits, including three homers, while walking two and striking out three. Rochester’s southpaw Jason Wheeler (9-4) did not fair better, yielding seven runs, all earned, on seven hits across six innings. Wheeler was hit for three long balls as well. Jonathan Holder pitched the final three innings to earn his third save. He allowed two hits, including a solo homer to John Ryan Murphy.

SWB opened the scoring in the first when Donovan Solano lined a single over short to plate Ben Gamel from third. With two on and two away, Cesar Puello bashed a three-run shot to left-center for a 4-0 lead.

Rochester answered with a three-run homer by Adam Brett Walker in the bottom of the first. Rochester native Cito Culver got a run back for SWB on his first Triple-A homer, a deep fly to left-center, in the second inning. Solano pushed the RailRiders’ lea to 7-3 in the third when his second hit of the night sailed over the left field wall for a two-run jack.

The Red Wings again pulled within a run thanks to a solo shot by Byron Buxton in the bottom of the third and a two-run round-tripper by Reynaldo Rodriguez in the sixth.

SWB plated three insurance runs in the seventh against reliever D.J. Baxendale. Sending all nine to the plate, the RailRiders scored runs on a singles by Solano and Puello. A fielding error by shortstop Wilfredo Tovar led to the third run and a 10-6 lead.

Murphy’s homer in the last of the seventh got the Red Wings within three at 10-7, but Aaron Judge launched his 19th homer of the season to the base of Frontier Field’s scoreboard in the next half inning. The blast off Neil Ramirez, a two-run shot, capped the scoring.

The RailRiders seek the series win against the Rochester Red Wings on Saturday, August 13 at Frontier Field. Left-hander Jordan Montgomery (1-1, 1.42) will oppose southpaw David Hurlbut, fresh up from Double-A Chattanooga (7-7, 3.51). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m For tickets or more information, please call 570-969-BALL (2255) or visit swbrailriders.com.
