RailRiders Split Pair with Bisons

MOOSIC, Pa. – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders scored a 4-0 win in the first game of a day-night doubleheader on Sunday at PNC Field before dropping the nightcap to the Buffalo Bisons 6-4. The RailRiders (46-39) and Bisons (41-43) have split their eight meetings this season. The shutout victory in game one was the RailRiders’ seventh of the season and third at home.

Joel De La Cruz (6-0) shined in matinee by blanking the Bisons over six innings on 53 pitches. He yielded two runs. Joel Pineiro (0-1) shouldered the loss despite pitching seven frames. He allowed four runs on 10 hits.

Ben Gamel led the offense with three hits, including his ninth triple of the season. Kyle Roller scored Gamel on a single in the first inning. Aaron Judge followed Gamel’s triple in the third with a single to score the RailRiders’ center fielder for a 2-0 lead. RBI from Gamel and Nick Noonan capped the scoring.

In game two, the Bisons crossed four times against starter Esmil Rogers in the third inning for a 4-0 lead. SWB battled back with a sacrifice fly to right by Judge in the fifth. Juan Graterol belted a three-run shot down the left field line just fair to square the game 4-4 in the sixth.

Buffalo responded with two runs in the seventh on a double by Luke Scott and a groundout to short by Andy Burns.

Jordan Foley (0-1) absorbed the loss in relief. The right-hander allowed two runs on two hits and three walks over two innings. Miguel Castro (1-2) took home the win despite a blown save. Castro surrendered three runs on the home run to Graterol in his single inning of work. Rob Rasmussen notched his first save of the year by tossing a scoreless ninth.

Cole Figueroa played both ends of the twinbill and combined for four hits. He has multi-hit showings in 11 of his last 13 games, including nine straight.

The RailRiders finish their four-game series with the Buffalo Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays) on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Jaron Long (5-5, 4.74) squares off against left-hander Matt Boyd (1-1, 2.25). The Syracuse Chiefs (Washington Nationals) invade PNC Field for a three-game series beginning Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a RailRiders patriotic logo t-shirt, presented by Norwegian Cruise Lines.
