Tyler Austin Plates Three with Third-Inning Double
Moosic, Pa. – The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/ New York Yankees) edged the Durham Bulls 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field to capture the weekend series, winning three-of-four. The RailRiders (64-38) are a season-best 26 games above .500 and claimed the season series from the Bulls (45-58), four games to three.
Kyle Haynes (4-4) matched his longest outing of the year, firing seven innings. He limited the Bulls to three runs on seven hits while walking one. He whiffed eight hitters, also equaling a game high for 2016. Nick Goody fired a perfect ninth for his fourth save with SWB.
The Bulls’ right-hander knuckler Eddie Gamboa (4-3) suffered the defeat after allowing four runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings. He issued a season-worst five walks, but set a new high mark for a single game with six strikeouts.
Durham jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a home run by J.P. Arencibia and a sacrifice fly from Jaff Decker. The RailRiders got a run back in the last of the second thanks to Tyler Austin. The first baseman walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Jake Cave.
SWB grabbed the lead for good in the home half of the third. Base hits by Jonathan Diaz and Ben Gamel sparked the rally. Gary Sanchez worked a two-out walk, loading the bases for Austin. After working a full count, Austin laced a hanging pitch down the left-field line for a three-run double and a 4-2 RailRiders’ lead.
Richie Shaffer pulled the Bulls within one by doubling home Casey Gillaspie in the fourth, but Durham drew no closer. The RailRiders closed out the game by holding the Bulls to two base runners, and no hits, from the sixth inning on.
The RailRiders open a series against the Buffalo Bisons on Monday, July 25, at PNC Field. Right-hander Luis Severino (7-1, 3.25) opposes righty Chris Leroux (7-7, 4.18). It’s Dollar Dog Night with $1 hot dogs and lawn seats and dogs are also allowed in for $1.
