So we are in the final stretch before the Yankees make their selection in round two. It will be televised on MLB tv Thursday night and will probably happen around 9:30 eastern time. Because the Yankees are drafting so late it’s hard to get a read on what they are going to do with their pick since some teams will draft multiple players before they even pick one time. What also effects the draft if if someone takes someone no one thinks is a first round talent like Hunter Dozier was last year when the Royals took him. Now since the Yankees must have a broad net for their first pick they have been linked to a type of player, high school catching.
First target if he is available Chase Vallot. He is a catcher who might not be a catcher long term. That sounds familiar doesn’t it. But his bat is his calling card. This is the cliche of cliche when it comes to Yankee catchers. But because there is a lack of up the middle talent you will see those players get taken off the board immediately.
Second target if Vallot isn’t available would be Jakson Reetz who is out of Nebraska. While Vallot has a high bat, Reetz I believe is the better prospect because there isn’t concerns that he could out grow the position. Reetz has all the tools that you want in a catcher, the soft hands, accurate and strong arm.
I think the Yankees would take the high bat profile instead of the better overall prospect. If I was running the Yankees draft I would take Reetz because of the overall package. What the Yankees might be thinking thou is John Ryan Murphy was a bat first prospect who developed into a very good defensive catcher with the potential to have a plus bat.
