Report: Cubs Return Caleb Smith to Yankees

Per Patrick Mooney of CSN Chicago, the Cubs are returning Caleb Smith to the New York Yankees.

Smith, was selected by Chicago in the major league phase of the 2016 Rule V Draft this December. The southpaw was vying for a spot in the defending world champions bullpen this spring. Chicago has decided to return Smith, and use Mike Montgomery and Brian Duensing as their left-handed relievers on the major league roster instead.

This spring, the southpaw tossed six and a third innings in relief, yielding three runs on eight hits. The 25-year old struck out seven opposing batters while walking two.

Caleb was initially acquired by the Yankees as a 14th round selection the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. He will report to minor league camp and will most likely begin the 2017 campaign pitching for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple A).
