Report: Yankees To Sign LHP Niese To MiLB Deal

Per a report by New York Post’s Joel Sherman, the New York Yankees will be signing free agent left-handed pitcher Jon Niese to a minor-league contract.  The former New York Mets pitcher will serve as additional rotation depth and a much-needed lefty starter with MLB experience.

Niese, 30, brings nine seasons of experience to the Yankees appearing in 211 total major league games with all but 23 of them being with the New York Mets.  Those 23 games in 2016 were with the Pittsburgh Pirates.  In his career, Niese owns a 69-68 record with a 4.07 ERA over 1,190 1/3 innings pitched.

After he passes, his physical Niese will be brought into major league spring training to work as both a starter and reliever per Sherman.  He spent the end of last season on the disabled list due to a left-knee injury.

It is important to note that this is a depth signing, it gives the Yankees an MLB-experienced lefty starter that can work in the rotation at Triple-A and provide spot starts or relief appearances.
