Reports: Jorge Mateo Performing Well, Yankees Still Believers

Since the acquisition of Gleyber Torres, Clint Frazier and others, former Yankee top prospect Jorge Mateo’s name has become a bit of an afterthought to some. Not to the Yankees, according to Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com.

Dan Greenlee, New York’s player development analyst said, “I think he’s capable of a lot, so you have such high expectations….it’s one of those things where (Mateo) is working on things, and when those things click, you’ll see very, very good results…I think there’s still a lot of confidence in him middle of the field and belief in him as a shortstop and as a second basemen…With the huge speed, very few guys can make that sort of impact in center field, and it’s more thinking about the enormous amount of runs he could potentially save out there.

Gary Denbo, the Yankees vice president of player development echoed that belief. Denbo was quoted in saying, “Jorge Mateo’s one of the fastest players in all of professional baseball. I think from the offensive side, he’s had to make adjustments to facing better pitching. On the baserunning side, he had to make adjustments to catchers doing a better of being able to catch and throw to second base and pitchers doing a better job of holding him on first base. He’s one of the youngest guys in the league.

“He’s going through the normal progression of development…We expect him to respond this year and come back and have a good year. He’s certainly one of the most talented players in all of Minor League Baseball, one of the best athletes and one of the fastest players in the entire sport. Lot of tools there, and a lot to like with Jorge Mateo.”

William Boor from MLB.com noted Mateo’s impressive performance in an article  Thursday. Boor said “Mateo has gotten off to a slow start in Spring Training this year, but he showed a vast skill set against Canada, going 2-for-2 with a double, stolen base, and run scored.

Mateo is currently ranked as the Yankees fifth-best prospect and 47th overall in Major League Baseball according to MLB.com.

Both Baseball America and Pinstriped Prospects have Jorge ranked fourth in the Yankees system, behind only Torres, Frazier and Blake Rutherford. The entire list of Pinstriped Prospects Top 50 prospect rankings can be viewed here.
