Earlier today Jon Heyman reported that right-handed reliever Tyler Clippard was heading back to the New York Yankees in a deal with Arizona Diamondbacks. Clippard, 31, got his start with the Yankees after being drafted in the ninth round of the 2003 draft.
Heading over to the Diamondbacks in the deal is right-handed pitcher Jose Vicente Campos. Steve Gilbert of MLB.com first reported the story.
Campos, 24, came to the Yankees along with Michael Pineda in the trade for Jesus Montero and Hector Noesi. After returning from Tommy John surgery last year he has rocketed through the farm system, earning a 9-3 record and a 3.20 ERA between the Tampa Yankees, Trenton Thunder and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. He had just made his Triple-A debut last week.
What are the Diamondbacks getting? A young prospect who fit into the 15-20 range in the Yankees farm system. Campos is a guy that throws hard, and can get his fastball up to 96-97 miles per hour. Long-term he factors in as a bullpen guy but right now could find himself in the rotation for the D-Backs AAA team, the Reno Aces.
