RiverDogs Blanked by Greenville 8-0 in Opener

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Charleston RiverDogs dropped the first of four games against the Greenville Drive 8-0 at Fluor Field at the West End Thursday night. The season series is now 5-0 in favor of the Drive in wins and 24-5 in runs.

The RiverDogs (21-19) had no luck facing Greenville (24-16) starting pitcher Denny Bautista (2-0) for the second time this season. The former major leaguer held Charleston scoreless and only allowed one hit on May 16 in his South Atlantic League debut. The RiverDogs got five hits against him Thursday night but failed to score once again.

The Drive got on the board first with a run in the first, and then added another on a solo home run by Joseph Monge in the third. Later in the inning, Jordan Procyshen ripped a one-out double to center that plated Derek Miller and Rafael Devers.

Greenville broke the game wide open in the eighth on a bases-clearing triple by Javier Guerra to make it 7-0. Charleston reliever Manolo Reyes exited the game before he recorded an out in the inning. The Drive added their final run later in the inning on a sacrifice fly to center.

Starter Luis Cedeno (3-3) took the loss for RiverDogs, his third in a row. Cedeno went five innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits. Williams Jerez earned his second save of the season by pitching the final three innings for Greenville and holding Charleston to just one hit.

COMING UP: The RiverDogs continue their four-game series against the Greenville Drive with a 7:05 p.m. game Friday. Charleston will send RHP Joey Maher (1-2, 4.18 ERA) to the mound against RHP Michael Kopech (1-2, 3.04 ERA) for the Drive. You can listen to the action on “The Big Talker” 1250 WTMA, WTMA.com, and RiverDogs.com.

The RiverDogs return home on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25th for special 6:35 p.m. start against the Rome Braves. Along with the special start time will be a special post-game fireworks show to round out the opener of the three-game homestand.
