RiverDogs Blown Out by Kannapolis 12-2 in Series Finale

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Charleston RiverDogs fell down by eight runs early Sunday evening and were unable to come back, as they lost 12-2 to the Kannapolis Intimidators in front of 4,012 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The RiverDogs (7-11 second half, 41-47 overall) scored their first run in the bottom of the sixth. Jorge Mateo hit a two-out single to center and took second base on defensive indifference. Bo Thompson followed with an RBI double to left.

Kannapolis (9-9, 44-43) scored the first eight runs of the game prior to the sixth, starting off with three in the first. Alexander Simon hit an RBI double with one out, a wild pitch brought home Mason Robbins from third, and then Simon scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Basto.

The Intimidators put the game out of reach with five runs in the top of the fourth. Basto and Brett Austin hit back-to-back doubles to start the frame. Three batters later, Ryan Lindemuth made a fielding error on a ground ball by Ethan Gross with runners on second and third. Both Austin and John Ziznewski scored on the error.

Robbins drove in Gross with a two-out single to center. Louie Lechich drove in the fifth run of the frame with a base hit. Kannapolis sent all nine batters to the plate in the five-run inning.

The Intimidators added four more runs in the top of the ninth. Austin hit a bases-loaded, two-out single that plated two runs. Later in the frame, Michael Danner connected with another bases-loaded, two-run single with two outs.

Charleston brought one more run home in the bottom of the inning. Alexander Palma grounded out with the bases loaded to drive in Mateo, who scored his second run of the game.

Spencer Adams (6-4) got his fourth win in a row for Kannapolis, pitching 5 2/3 innings and only allowing one run. Matt Wotherspoon (2-1) took the loss for Charleston, giving up five earned runs on seven hits.

BALLPARK FUN: The RiverDogs celebrated Irish Heritage Night at The Joe. Many fans sported Irish apparel, the Ireland National Anthem was played before the game, and Gaelic Football and Hurling were played in the outfield for mid-inning entertainment. The play of the day came from a woman in front of the press box who caught a foul ball when it was wedged in between her forearm and bicep. After the game, fans stuck around to receive autographs on the field from all their favorite RiverDogs players. Plenty of kids were in attendance for another successful Kids Club Sunday.

COMING UP: The RiverDogs have a day off Monday before hitting the road for a seven-game trip. Charleston will travel to Rome for three games and then Savannah for four games. You can listen to all the action on “The Big Talker” 1250 WTMA, WTMA.com, and RiverDogs.com.
