RiverDogs Clawed By Crawdads 4-1

CHARLESTON, SC – The Charleston RiverDogs were held hitless through the first five innings and could not bounce back in the late innings, falling 4-1 to the Hickory Crawdads in front of 4,367 faithful fans Saturday night at The Joe.

Hickory (16-6) got on the board early with two runs in the top of the first against R’Dogs starter Justin Kamplain. Travis Demeritte drew a one-out walk and then the Crawdads hit three singles in a row, plating Demeritte and Ronald Guzman. Jose Trevino and Luke Tendler each picked up an RBI on their base hits.

The Crawdads added another run in the top of the sixth on an RBI infield single by Jose Cardona. Tripp Martin was running on the 3-2 pitch with two outs and scored all the way from second base on the flair single to center.

Hickory’s Brett Martin pitched into the sixth inning, where Charleston finally got their first hit and lone run of the game. Radley Haddad picked up his first hit and RBI as a RiverDog when singled in Devin Bolasky, and cut the deficit to 3-1.

The RiverDogs (14-8) did not score again despite having runners in scoring position in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. However, the Crawdads did add one more insurance run to their lead in the ninth inning on an RBI single by Ronald Guzman against Charleston’s Rony Bautista.

Martin (2-0) picked up the win for Hickory, their league-leading 16th of the season, and John Fasola earned his fourth save in as many chances. On the other side Kamplain (1-3) took the loss.

BALLPARK FUN: Prostate Cancer Awareness Night, nicknamed “Night of Man”, was a huge success. Some of the manliest men in the Lowcountry came out to The Joe to cheer on the RiverDogs. In addition to the “Night of Man” festivities, the RiverDogs all wore blue wristbands to support the fight against prostate cancer. After the game ended, fans played Launch-A-Ball and the kids (and some youthful parents) ran around the bases to conclude another evening of fun at The Joe.

COMING UP: The RiverDogs and Crawdads continue with game three of the four-game set, 5:05 p.m., Sunday night at The Joe. LHP Jordan Montgomery (2-2, 3.80) gets the nod for Charleston and RHP Collin Wiles (3-0, 0.00) is slated to throw for Hickory. You can watch the game on MiLB.tv or listen to the action on “The Big Talker” 1250 WTMA, WTMA.com, and RiverDogs.com.

Sunday at The Joe is a Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission Kids Club Sunday, presented by Y102.5. Parking is free, and kids 12-under eat free courtesy of Pepsi. They will receive a coupon for a hot dog, fountain drink and chips. In addition to the Kids Club Sunday events, the RiverDogs will also be celebrating Jewish Heritage Night and Dog Day, sponsored by Banfield Pet Hospital.
