The Charleston RiverDogs kept up their fierce offensive pace as they defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 6-1 in the first game of the four game set.
The Greenjackets would score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead on Charleston starter Rookie Davis and that would be all the offense on the night for Augusta. Davis went six strong innings allowing only four hits and two walks while striking out nine batters.
The RiverDogs would tie the ballgame up in the third inning after two errors scored Tyler Wade after he singled on a bunt ground ball to second base. In the fifth inning Michael O’Neill would single on a bunt to first base and the third error of the game would push him to second and O’Neill would score on a sac fly to give the RiverDogs a 2-1 lead.
A single by Eduardo de Oleo, who was 3-for-5 on the evening, started off the sixth inning for Charleston. de Oleo would move to third on a Claudio Custodio double to set up two on with one out. de Oleo would score on a groundout to stretch the lead then O’Neill would single to third base to score Custodio and give the RiverDogs a 4-1 advantage.
O’Neill was 3-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI on the night. First baseman Jackson Valera continued to hit going 2-for-5 with a run scored and RBI. Valera is hitting .333 in his last 10 games with Charleston since getting more playing time when Mike Ford moved up to High-A Tampa.
Valera lead off the ninth inning with a double and came around to score on a one out double by left fielder Brandon Thomas. Thomas would score on a de Oleo single to left field to push the score to 6-1 Charleston and finish the scoring on the evening.
Evan Rutckyj threw two innings of relief for Rookie Davis allowing a hit and a walk during his time. Stefan Lopez finished off the ninth inning by striking out the side to end things.
The RiverDogs (69-68) look to expand on their three game win streak as they take on the Greenjackets again Saturday evening, the Dogs starter is to be announced.
