RiverDogs Stung By Sand Gnats, Fall 6-1

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Charleston RiverDogs started Saturday night strong with a run in the first, but the Savannah Sand Gnats came back and won their third straight game over the R’Dogs 6-1 at Historic Grayson Stadium.

Jorge Mateo led off the game with an infield single. He then stole second and scored later in the inning on a two-out, RBI double by Connor Spencer.

The early tally would be the only run of support for Charleston (23-26) starting pitcher Justin Kamplain (1-6). He gave up four runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings and lost his team-high sixth game of the season. The RiverDogs have been outscored 39-22 in Kamplain’s 10 starts.

The lefty held Savannah (24-25) scoreless for the first two innings, but the Sand Gnats tied the game in the third. Luis Guillorme singled to left, stole second, and scored on Eudor Garcia’s RBI single.

The following inning, Savannah took the lead for good with a two-run bottom of the fourth. John Mora led off the frame with an infield single, and then Jon Leroux blasted a two-run homer to left. Leroux hit a walk-off home run for the Sand Gnats in the ninth inning of Thursday night’s game.

Savannah extended their lead to 4-1 on an RBI single by Tomas Nido in the fifth. Two innings later, the Sand Gnats piled on two more runs. John Mora hit a sacrifice fly that scored Wuilmer Becerra, and they followed with a successful double-steal. With runners on first and third, Leroux swiped second and Garcia came home to score from third.

Scarlyn Reyes (4-4) worked around the first-inning run and held the RiverDogs scoreless for the next five. Jimmy Duff and Alberto Baldonado pitched three scoreless innings of relief for Savannah.

The RiverDogs have now lost six games in a row, including the last three to Savannah. It marks the second time during the month of May that the RiverDogs have dropped six in a row. Charleston closes out their four-game series at Historic Grayson Stadium and will try to avoid being swept for the second series in a row.
