Moosic, Pa- A Sunday afternoon ballgame including two highly-touted starters, timely hitting by Austin Romine and a little help from the sun were all a part of a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders(Triple-A/New York Yankees) win over the Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston Red Sox) 5-4 at PNC Field.
Rob Refsnyder launched his first Triple-A home run off Allen Webster in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. RailRiders’ starter Shane Greene would give the lead up the next half inning. The PawSox (38-40) sent seven batters to the plate scoring three runs highlighted by a Dan Butler two-run double making it 2-1. A passed ball allowed a third run to score to make it 3-1.
The RailRiders (36-39) added a pair of runs in the third after Pawtucket added a single tally in the top half of the inning. Jose Pirela reached on error before Refsnyder and Zoilo Almonte singled consecutively to score Pirela making it 4-2. A wild pitch and a passed ball allowed Refsnyder to advance and score cutting the deficit 4-3. In the sixth with runners on the corners and one out, Austin Romine drove Kyle Roller in with a sacrifice fly tying it at 4-4.
SWB got a little help from the sun in the eighth. With runners on first and second and one out, Romine skied a ball to right field. Alex Hassan lost it in the sun allowing Roller to score from first giving the RailRiders the eventual lead and victory.
RailRiders pitching retired 14 straight before Butler’s two-out single in the ninth. Pat Venditte tossed three scoreless frames while Danny Burawa came in for the save.
