Santos, Others Join Thunder; Renda Assigned

The Trenton Thunder, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees have seven roster moves to announce prior to Thursday’s game against the Erie SeaWolves.

Add: RHP Sergio Santos (Wearing No. 51)
Add: LHP Matt Tracy from Triple-A SWB (No. 59)
Add: OF Taylor Dugas from Triple-A SWB (No. 7)
Delete: RHP Alex Smith to High-A Tampa
Delete: LHP Eric Wooten to High-A Tampa
Delete: OF Mark Payton to High-A Tampa
Transfer:  RHP Joel De La Cruz from Triple-A SWB DL to Trenton DL (No. 34)

RHP Sergio Santos, 31, began the season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and has spent parts of the last six seasons in the big leagues with the Dodgers, Chicago White Sox and Toronto Blue Jays. Santos was originally a 1st Round selection (27th Overall) in 2002 by the Arizona Diamondbacks out of Mater Dei High School in California. He signed with the Dodgers January 8, 2015 and was granted free agency by the Dodgers on June 6 before signing with the Yankees.

This season, Santos appeared in 12 games with the Dodgers and posted a 4.73 ERA over 13.1 IP. He has struck out 15 batters in those 13.1 innings and has struck out 224 batters in 180.0 IP in his MLB career (11.2 K/9). Santos has extended playing time in the Eastern League when he was making his ascent to the big leagues—but it came as a position player. In 2007, the Los Angeles-native batted .250 with 34 2B, 2 3B, 20 HR and 62 RBI in 113 games for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Before converting to a relief pitcher in 2009, Santos had previously rated as the No. 37 prospect by Baseball America in 2004 and the No. 61 prospect in 2005.

Additionally, INF Tony Renda has been acquired from the Washington Nationals organization and will be assigned to Trenton, but has not yet reported.

Following the roster moves, the Thunder active roster remains at the Eastern League maximum of 25 players.
