Overview:
I love this pick for the Yankees in the first round! Sweeney is a guy who’s an advanced hitter from the left side, something that definitely plays at Yankee Stadium. Currently, he plays shortstop but could move over to third base and become an athletic corner infielder. Sweeney’s combination of an advanced approach and hit tool should allow him to move through the system quickly if he can pick up third base rapidly.
Tool:
Hit –Sweeney is a talented left handed hitter. The bat head stays on plane a long time through the hitting zone and his plate discipline is advanced. These two things lead to great bat to ball skills that should project to a high average.

Power –Sweeney has added power during his college career. His junior season Sweeney hit 14 homeruns with 58 RBI. He makes a lot of solid contact, which should allow the power to further develop as a professional.
Grade

50 | 55 |
Speed/Baserunning –Sweeney is not going to steal a lot of bases. His lack of speed is also a factor in moving him to third base as well.
Grade

Defense – Sweeney has limited range at shortstop, which is why a move to third base may be in order. There is athleticism in the hands and feet that will translate into an athletic corner infielder.
Grade

Arm – Sweeney has plenty of arm strength. If he does move to third, his arm will be an asset.

Summary:
Though you may not know or have heard a lot about Trey Sweeney, be excited Yankee fans. This was a great pick! Though he may need to learn a new position, he gives the Yankees a legit left handed bat who can move through the system quickly.
