Several Yankees Prospects Selected in Dominican Winter League Draft

On Thursday the Dominican Professional Baseball League, also known as the Dominican Winter League and LIDOM, held their annual draft and fives Yankees prospects were selected by two teams in the draft.

Right-handed pitchers Freicer Perez and Rony Garcia were selected by Estrellas Orientales.

Perez, 21, was drafted in the ninth round.  The Santiago, DR native has spent the last three seasons in the Yankees organization where he has composed a 19-10 record with a 3.30 ERA over 245 2/3 innings, striking out 234 batters and walking 87.  On our mid-season list, we ranked Perez as the 13th best prospect in the Yankees organization and has earned high praise from scouts and coaches’ a like.  He spent the entire 2017 season in the South Atlantic League with the Charleston RiverDogs.

Garcia, 19, has spent the last two seasons with the Yankees where in 27 games, 25 starts, he has thrown 146 2/3 innings, striking out 112 batters while walking 30.  More impressively he has limited hitters to a .222 batting average against in his career while maintaining a 2.39 ERA.  He ended his 2017 season with the Charleston RiverDogs, after starting the year in the Appy league with the Pulaski Yankees.

The Gigantes del Cibao drafted three Yankees prospects in the persons of first baseman Dermis Garcia, and right-handed pitchers Raynel Espinal and Alexander Vargas.

Dermis Garcia, 19, was one of the Yankees top signees during the 2014 International Free Agent season and in 143 career minor league games he has hit .219/.331/.457 with 30 career home runs, 75 RBIs, and 79 walks. This past season he split his time between Pulaski and Charleston, hitting .270/.397/.565 in 33 games in the Appy league and .227/.312/.518 in the South Atlantic League.  On our midseason top 50 prospects list we ranked him as the 18th best prospect in the system.

Raynel Espinal (Martin Griff)

Espinal, 25, was the oldest Yankees prospect drafted in the LIDOM draft. He made his professional debut in 2013 and had since earned a career 12-15 record and a 3.02 ERA in 80 games, 15 starts.  Over 205 1/3 innings he has struck out 237 batters while walking just 51.  This past season he has pitched at three different levels, topping out at Double-A Trenton where he went 2-0 with a 0.46 ERA in 9 games, two starts, for the Thunder and struck out 28 batters in 19 2/3 innings pitched.  Overall he has a 4-2 record and a 1.09 ERA, and 93 strikeouts in 74 1/3 innings pitched between all three teams he played for in 2017.

Alexander Vargas  (Martin Griff)

Alexander Vargas, 20, has been with the Yankees since 2014 and has compiled an 8-7 record over 28 games, 27 starts.  He struck out 92 batters over 127 innings in three seasons, topping out with the Charleston RiverDogs in 2017.  This past season he went 6-3 between the RiverDogs and the Staten Island Yankees, earning a 2.74 ERA and striking out 48 batters in 72 1/3 innings.  On our midseason top 50 prospect list, he was ranked as the #46 best prospect in the Yankees organization.

The Dominican Professional Baseball League begins their season on Friday, October 13 with Tigres Del Licey taking on Aguilas Cibaenas at 7:15 pm.  Stay tuned to Pinstriped Prospects for more coverage when the rosters for each team is announced.
