Sizemore Powers RailRiders to One-Run Win

FLORES SCORES THREE RUNS IN VICTORY

Norfolk, Va. – Scott Sizemore added two hits, including a double and two RBI, and the RailRiders fought off three different rallies to claim the first of four contests against the Norfolk Tides (Baltimore Orioles/Triple-A) Thursday night at Harbor Park, 4-3. The win improves SWB to 2-3 overall on the current eight-game road tripe and drops Norfolk to a league worst 1-9 in games decided by a single run.

Ramon Flores led off the first inning with a base hit to left and moved to third on a hit-and-run by Dean Anna. With runners at first and second, SWB’s first run came across on a ground ball by Russ Canzler.

Trailing 1-0 after the top of the first, Norfolk was quick to respond. RailRiders starter Caleb Cotham walked Quintin Berry who proceeded to move to second on a stolen base. Berry came around to score on an RBI single by catcher Caleb Joseph that evened the game at 1-1.

After a scoreless second, SWB’s Flores added to his team-leading walk tally with his 17th free pass to begin the RailRider threat in the third. Flores scored a double down the left-field line by Sizemore to give the RailRiders the advantage, 2-1.

In a see-saw affair, Nofolk had a response of its own in the third. Ivan De Jesus reached on a walk and, after Brett Wallace fought off seven pitches, the designated hitter brought around the tying run with a double that fell out of the reach of Adonis Garcia to plate. The run by De Jesus evened the contest for the second time at 2-2.

SWB threatened throughout the sixth and seventh inning, including leaving the bases loaded in sixth after Garcia struck out to end the inning. SWB broke through in the eighth after Zoilo Almonte added his second hit of the night on a base knock to right. Almonte moved to second base by way of his third stolen base and advanced to third on a throwing error. After leaving three runners on base in the sixth, Garcia redeemed himself with a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Almonte.

A home run by Joseph in the eighth off Mark Montgomery evened the game at 3-3 before the RailRiders delivered the final blow in the ninth. Flores reached base for the third time on a one-out double to left before and scored on the second hit of the evening by Sizemore. The run pushed to RailRiders lead to 4-3.

SWB and Norfolk combined to toss 11 pitchers on the evening. Montgomery (1-0), despite allowing the home run, earned the win, while Chris Jones (1-3) was slated with the loss.

The RailRiders and Tides will continue their four-game series on Friday, May 2 at 7:05 p.m.  SWB sends right-hander Brian Gordon (1-1, 3.51), while Norfolk twirls right-hander Kevin Gausman (0-1, 2.53) to the bump. Aaron Berlin will have the call on radio with the pregame show beginning at 6:35 p.m. on NEPA Sports Radio – The GAME, Northeast PA’s largest sports radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM.
