TRENTON, NJ – Smith, Smith and Smith did not get it done for the Trenton Thunder Friday night.

What they did was combine to allow 12 runs, as the Thunder, once with an 8-3 lead, lost to the Portland Sea Dogs, 12-10, Friday night in front of 5,347 fans at ARM & HAMMER Park.

Smith’s Brothers cough drops were more effective in their day. It was the first tine in the Thunder’s 21-year run three pitchers with same last name handled the hurling – or at least attempted to – in franchise history. The deciding inning was the top of the seventh, when Chris Smith and Alex Smith, both in relief of Caleb Smith, allowed seven runs.

Francisco Arcia and Ali Castillo each drove in three runs to lead the Thunder offense. The Thunder eclipsed double-digit runs for the third time this season. Aaron Judge went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two driven in and Cito Culver went 3-for-4 with a run scored an RBI and a walk.

Prior to the game, Thunder manager Al Pedrique mentioned he was not surprised top prospect right-hander Luis Severino was promoted to Triple-A Scranton.Wilkes-Barre earlier in the week when the club was on the road after a 9-strikeout performance.

“The last few times out, Luis has really been lights-out,” said Pedrique. “He was throwing stuff batters had no idea how to hit. He showed more fire and more confidence.

“All his pitches were really sharp, and his slider is really improving. It will e good for him to pitch in Triple-A against some older guys.”

Pedrique also gave a progress report on first baseman Greg Bird, who is coming back from a strained shoulder which has sidelined him for several weeks.’

“Greg is starting to take batting practice in Tampa, which is good progress,” Pedrique said.

RHP Eric Ruth (2-0, 2.22) will face Portland RHP Mike Augliera (2-7, 4.44) at 7 p.m. Saturday in Game 2 of the series..
