Staten Island Pitching, Defense Still Struggling

Last night the Staten Island Yankees suffered their worst loss of the season dropping the final game of a three-game set to the Aberdeen Ironbirds 21-7. The game set several not-so-good records for the Baby Bombers including most runs allowed and most hits given up in a road game . Staten Island also committed two errors.

So far this has been a sub-par year for the Staten Island Yankees, the likes of which have not been seen in St. George since the two consecutive last-place finishes in 2003 and 2004.

Fielding has been one reason the Yankees have struggled this season, committing 25 errors which is behind only the Hudson Valley Renegades who have committed 27 errors. Third-baseman Matt Duran leads the team with eight errors which is also good for second in the league. Duran who has been one of many Yankees struggling in this early going looks like he is better suited for an outfield spot than manning the hot corner.

Others who have struggled include prospects Ravel Santana and Claudio Custodio. Santana has been a free-swinger at the plate and also looks to be getting bad jumps on balls hit to him in the outfield. Couple that with his inability to stay healthy and he can fall off the prospect map after this season.

On the hitting side, it looks like the Yankee bats are finally starting to come alive with 35 hits in their last four games, averaging 8.75 hits a game. As a team they have the least hits in the league, with 118 hits. Staten Island hitters have struck out a combined 131 times.

Pitching has been the most disappointing aspect of the Baby Bombers game this year. Guys like Taylor Morton and Evan DeLuca are struggling to find the velocity they once had. Combined the Yankees have a 4.57 ERA, which is the second highest in the league. Opponents have scored 98 runs, 70 earned runs, which is the most in the league.

With 20% of the season completed there still is a chance the Staten Island Yankees can turn it around and return to their winning ways. With several transactions rumored to be happening soon it looks like the team might get some much needed new blood.
