Staten Island Yankees 2018 Pre-Season Roster Projection

As we head into the summer months, the rosters for the Short-Season and Rookie League Affiliates start to become clearer. Once Extended Spring Training is over, and the MLB Draft has taken place, these rosters can be confirmed.

In preparation for these events, we at Pinstriped Prospects would like to showcase 35 players that could potentially play for the Staten Island Yankees this coming season. Some of these prospects would be making their Single-A debut, while others have played at either Charleston or would be returning to Staten Island. With the depth of Yankee talent across the farm system, this should be a fun year at the ballpark:

Nolan Martinez – Originally Drafted out of High School by the New York Yankees in the Third Round of the 2016 MLB Draft. The Right-Handed Pitcher spent the 2017 season playing between two Rookie League Affiliates; the GCL West Yankees and Pulaski Yankees. Martinez was the #24 Prospect in the Pinstriped Prospects Pre-Season Ranking.

Clarke Schmidt – Originally Drafted out of College (South Carolina) by the New York Yankees in the First Round of the 2017 MLB Draft. The Right-Handed Pitcher was Signed for below-slot value, as he had undergone Tommy John Surgery during the College Baseball Season. The 2018 season will be Schmidt’s first professional season, after missing time in 2017 due to his arm injury. Was the #14 Prospect in the Pinstriped Prospects Pre-Season Rankings.

Jhony Brito – Originally Signed by the New York Yankees as an International Free Agent (Dominican Republic) in 2015. Brito spent the 2017 season with the Staten Island Yankees, Starting three games. During the off-season, Robert Pimpsner wrote a Profile Piece about this Right-Handed Pitcher.

Nelvin Correa – Originally Signed by the New York Yankees as an International Free Agent (Dominican Republic) in 2016. Correa’s 2017 season was split between the Dominican Summer League and GCL West Yankees.  Correa was a late addition to the Staten Island Yankees roster in 2017 but did not play in any games.

Juan De Paula – Originally Signed by the Seattle Mariners as an International Free Agent (Dominican Republic) in 2014. De Paula was acquired with Jio Orozco by the Yankees in the Ben Gamel trade. De Paula pitched in 12 games with the Staten Island Yankees last season. The Right-Handed Starting Pitcher was named the #27 Prospect in the Pinstriped Prospects Preseason Rankings.

Daniel Alvarez – Originally Signed by the New York Yankees as an International Free Agent (Venezuela) in 2014. Alvarez spent the 2017 season as a Starter with the Staten Island Yankees. This past Winter, Alvarez pitched exclusively out of the bullpen in the Venezuelan Winter League.

Deivi Garcia – Originally Signed by the New York Yankees as an International Free Agent (Dominican Republic) in 2015. Garcia pitched with three different Yankee affiliates in 2017; Pulaski, GCL West Yankees, and in the Dominican Summer League. This Right-Handed Starting Pitcher was named the #59 Prospect in the Pinstriped Prospects Preseason Rankings, and a pitcher to watch in the 2018 season.

Harold Cortijo – Originally Drafted out of High School by the New York Yankees in the 14th Round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Cortijo spent the 2017 season with the GCL East Yankees, making ten appearances. Pinstriped Prospects Founder Robert Pimpsner lists Cortijo as a pitcher to watch in the 2018 season.

Austin Gardner – Originally Drafted out of College (Texas-Arlington) by the New York Yankees in the 9th Round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Gardner spent the 2017 season with the GCL West Yankees, pitching exclusively out of the bullpen. Following the draft, Austin Gardner gave an interview to Pinstriped Prospects.

Tony Hernandez – Originally Drafted out of College (Monroe Community College) by the New York Yankees in the 15th Round of the 2016 MLB Draft. Hernandez spent the 2017 season with the GCL East Yankees. Here is a Prospect Profile about this Lefty Pitcher, written after the 2016 MLB Draft.

Ron Marinaccio – Originally Drafted out of College (Delaware) by the New York Yankees in the 19th Round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Shawn Semple – Originally Drafted out of College (University of New Orleans) by the New York Yankees in the 11th Round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Bryan Blanton – Originally Drafted out of College (Catawba College) by the New York Yankees in the 21st Round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Blanton split the 2017 season between two Rookie-League affiliates: Pulaski and the GCL West Yankees. Alexander Vizcaino – Originally Signed by the New York Yankees as an International Free Agent (Dominican Republic) in 2016. Vizcaino pitched with Rookie Level Pulaski in 2017 and was used mostly as a Starting Pitcher. Pinstriped Prospects recently had a chance to see this Right-Handed Pitcher in Extended Spring Training.

Alex Mauricio – Originally Drafted out of College (Norfolk State University) by the New York Yankees in the 27th Round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Chad Whitmer – Originally Drafted out of College (Southern Illinois) by the New York Yankees in the 10th Round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Whitmer spent the 2017 season with the GCL West Yankees, pitching exclusively out of the Bullpen. We were lucky enough to get an interview with this Right-Handed Pitching Prospect, following the 2017 MLB Draft.

Ricky Surum – Originally Drafted out of College (Mount Olive) by the New York Yankees in the 16th Round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Surum played with three different Yankee affiliates in 2017; Tampa, Pulaski, and the GCL East Yankees. Andres Chaparro – Originally Signed by the New York Yankees as an International Free Agent (Venezuela) in 2015. Chaparro was assigned to Rookie Level Pulaski in 2017, where he appeared in 46 games.

Jesus Bastidas – Originally Signed by the New York Yankees as an International Free Agent (Venezuela) in 2015. Bastidas was assigned to Rookie Level Pulaski in 2017, where he appeared in 40 games. Robert Pimpsner took some video of this Infielder during Spring Training.

Eric Wagaman – Originally Drafted out of College (Orange Coast College) by the New York Yankees in the 13th Round of the 2017 MLB Draft. This First Baseman Prospect spent the 2017 season playing for the Pulaski Yankees. Wagaman was named the #56 Prospect in the Pinstriped Prospects Pre-Season Rankings.

Saul Torres – Originally Signed by the New York Yankees as an International Free Agent (Dominican Republic) in 2016. Torres played with Rookie Level Pulaski in 2017. This Catching Prospect was named the #31 Prospect in the Pinstriped Prospects Pre-Season Rankings.

Welfrin Mateo – Originally Signed by the New York Yankees as an International Free Agent (Dominican Republic) in 2016. If Mateo is assigned to Staten Island this season, this will be a return trip for the Infielder. Earlier this year, Ricky Keeler was able to write a Pinstriped Profile about this prospect.

Jose Polonia – Originally Signed by the New York Yankees as an International Free Agent (Dominican Republic) in 2014. If Polonia is assigned to Staten Island this season, this will be a return trip for the 2017 NY-Penn League All-Star infielder. Eduardo Torrealba – Originally Signed by the Boston Red Sox as an International Free Agent (Venezuela) in 2015. After his release in 2016, the New York Yankees signed this Infield Prospect to a Minor League Contract. Torrealba was assigned to Rookie Level Pulaski in 2017, where he appeared in 52 games.

Cody Brown – Originally Signed by the New York Yankees as an Non-Drafted Free Agent out of College (Mississippi State). Brown spent the entire 2017 season with the Staten Island Yankees. Earlier this year, Ricky Keeler was able to write a Pinstriped Profile about this prospect.

Andy Diaz – Originally Signed by the New York Yankees as an International Free Agent (Dominican Republic) in 2014. Junor Soto – Originally Signed by the Cleveland Indians as an International Free Agent (Dominican Republic) in 2013. Acquired by the New York Yankees in the 2017 Minor League Phase of the Rule V Draft. Soto was named the #74 Prospect in the Pinstriped Prospects Pre-Season Rankings.

Frederick Cuevas – Originally Signed by the New York Yankees as an International Free Agent (Dominican Republic) in 2014. Spent the 2017 season with the Pulaski Yankees, and has played for Single A Charleston in 2018.

Canaan Smith – Originally Drafted out of High School by the New York Yankees in the Fourth Round of the 2017 MLB Draft. The Outfield prospect spent the 2017 season with the GCL East Yankees. Smith was the #36 Prospect in the Pinstriped Prospects Pre-Season Ranking.
