T-Yanks’ dominate Threshers in 12-1 victory

The Tampa Yankees were at Bright House Field on Monday night to take on the division rival Clearwater Threshers. RHP Rookie Davis took the start for the T-Yanks against the Threshers’ David Whitehead (ERA 2.12). The T-Yanks would dominate this one offensively as they earned the 12-1 victory.

After two consecutively great starts, Davis continued with the same momentum as he took charge against the Threshers. In his last two starts he’s allowed just 6 hits and 1 earned run in eleven innings of work. Monday night was no different; Davis went 5 2/3 innings allowing 4 hits, fanning 7 batters with no walks or runs allowed.

The T-Yanks took the lead in the top of the third 3rd when Claudio Custodio hit a double on a line drive to left. Mark Payton then was at the plate when Custodio stole third base and then a throwing error by the Threshers’ catcher Andrew Knapp led him to score and put the Yanks up 1-0.

In the top of the 4th, the T-Yanks increased their lead to two runs when Mike Ford scored off a RBI double by Ericson Leonora.

But, the Yanks’ bats didn’t cool down as the offensive power continued in the top of the 5th. Payton started the inning with a walk which was then followed by a single by Tyler Wade. A RBI single by Matt Snyder sent Payton home and then a wild pitch by Clearwater’s Whitehead sent Wade home to put Tampa up 4-0. Snyder would have a great night as he racked up 4 RBIs.

In the top of the 6th, Clearwater would make a pitching change replacing Whitehead with RHP Mark Leiter Jr. , the son of former Major Leaguer Mark Leiter and nephew of Major Leaguer Al Leiter. Whitehead’s final line would be 5 innings allowing 6 hits and 4 runs; striking out 6 batters. However, the T-Yanks’ offense beat Leiter up a bit as he would make it through just 1/3 of an inning allowing 5 hits and 4 runs; 1 earned run after an inning filled with quite a few errors by the Threshers.

Right-hander Chad Taylor (ERA 3.60) took over for Davis in the end of the fifth and after 1 1/3 innings, allowed just hit and the Threshers lone run in the bottom of the 7th.

Stats:
Matt Snyder: 4 for 5; DBL;4RBIs
Tyler Wade: 2 for 5; RBI
Miguel Andujar: 1 for 6; 2RBIs
Ericson Leonora: 2 for 5; 2DBL; RBI
Angelo Gumbs: 1 for 5; DBL; RBI
