The Dominican Summer League officially returned last week. For the Yankees system, the big name this year is top international free agent Brando Mayea. Mayea immediately showed why he’s such an interesting prospect. He lined the first professional pitch he saw into the RF corner, showing off his power and speed. Moments later Mayea attempted to steal 3B, and went down with a what looked to be an ankle injury and he hasn’t been back in the lineup since. Brando relayed to me that he is ok, so we have to assume he’s being kept out of the lineup as a precaution.
Of the 2023 IFA Class, Gabriel Lara has to be the one prospect who’s busted out of the gate early on and looking to be this season’s Keiner Delgado. Lara hit .455 for the week, with 4 extra base hits and big walk off 3-run home run in extra innings. He was on our list of DSL Prospects to keep an eye on this season.
The pitching for the DSL teams early standouts:
- Chalniel Arias opened the season for the Bombers squad and tossed a gem. He pitched 6 shutout innings, allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, gave up no walks and struck out a career high 12 batters.
- Jerson Alejandro, another International Free Agent from the 2023 class, also successfully debuted last week. He tossed 4 shutout innings and struck out 4.
- Omar Gonzalez pitched 2.2 Innings of shutout baseball, and struck out 6.
- Michael Peres tossed 4 shoutout innings, and struck out 8 batters on the day.
- Alejandro Gomez has already logged 7.1 Innings, hasn’t allowed a run yet.
