The Dominican Summer League Round Up: 6/25 – 7/1

Almost a month into the Dominican Summer League and the NYY Yankees are still in the pole position, up by 1.5 games.  The Bombers who were in a tailspin dropped from second place to fourth, after the offense seemed to disappear but this week the offense came back to life and now they find themselves in third place.

The NYY Yankees had a few standout prospects this week, lead by Josue Gonzalez who hit .714 this week.  Gonzalez is having a great season, slashing .340/.493 w/1.040 OPS, 5 doubles, 2 HR and 18 RBI.  Luis Ogando was also a standout this week, hitting .500 with a HR and 6 RBI.  On the season, Ogando is slashing .379/.449 w/1.035 OPS, 6 doubles, 2 HR and 13 RBI.  This week also saw Jhon Imbert break out with a 3 HR and 9 RBI game.  Brando Mayea also blasted his first professional HR.

On the pitching front, Pedro Rodriguez lead the way by throwing 4 2/3 shutout innings, allowed just 2 hits and struck out 10 batters.

The NYY Bombers on the side started the week with back to back loses but a walk off HR by Andres Lacruz has seemed to energized this team.  The following game the Bombers put up 3 touchdowns, winning 21-10 and two more wins followed.

The Bombers team has found strong pitching performances by some of the prospects like Omar Gonzalez who pitched into the 5th, allowing no runs and striking out 7.  Mariano Salomon pitched 4 1/3 innings allowed no earned runs and struck out 8 in the contest.  Chalniel Arias continues to lead this staff and add to his league leading strike out totals.  Orvis Fernandez made his debut this week.  He pitched 1 2/3 Innings, allowed just one hit and struck out 4.
