The Dominican Summer League Round Up: 7/10-7/15

Six weeks into the Dominican Summer League finds the DSL NYY Yankees holding onto first place by a half game following a 5-5 record over last 10 games.  The Yankees are trending in right direction after 3-1 last week, but they missed a chance to hold more ground due to weather.

The DSL Yankees opened the week with a wild barn barner that saw them outlast the DSL Rockies by a score of 20-19! Jose Castro, Luis Ogando, Luis Escudero, and Jhon Imbert all homered in that game.  The next day was one of those baseball being baseball days, because the DSL Yankees led by Jerson Alejandro, combined with Orvis Fernandez/Pedro Rodriguez to throw a no-hitter that the Yankees win 1-0.  The next game saw them put up 10 runs led by Luis Ogando’s 3 RBI.   Brando Mayea/Josue Gonzalez/Andres Lacruz with multi-hit games.  The final game of the week saw the Yankees lose in wild fashion, as a wild pitch by Pedro Rodriguez allows 2 runs to score and walk off the Yanks.

The Bombers dropped a spot in the standings to 7th, and find themselves just 2 games out of last place.  They continue to struggle when Chalniel Arias isn’t on the mound.  Their only win this weeks came during his start.  Outside of Arias, the pitching allowed 38 runs over 4 games last week.

The offense has been up and down, but the clear bright spot is lead-off hitter Gabriel Terrero.  The switch hitting 2B is slashing .359/.446 with 1.087 OPS, 6 XBH, 4 HR, 17 RBI and 10 SB on the season.  International Signing Day prospect Richard Meran will also be making his long awaited debut this week, and should help the offense.
