While the rest of the Yankees minor league system is off due to the All-Star Game break, the Dominican Summer League is the only active league.
The NYY Yankees come off a down week, going 1-3 after a few tightly contested games but still holding onto first place without losing any ground. Their offense has been key in getting the team to the top of the division, and that’s thanks to the consistent offense from several players. Brando Mayea continues to be a catalyst for their offense, drawing 6 walks and 2 hits over the 4 game span. Fellow rookie Jose Castro has been hitting near the top of the order and last week hit .500 w/5 RBI in 3 games. Castro’s slashing .333/.500 2 XBH, HR and 9 RBI in 11 games this season. Santiago Gomez has arguably been this team’s most consistent hitter since day one, slashing .319/.463 with 7 XBH, 2 HR and 21 RBI. Luis Ogando is having a good follow up season after hitting .300 last year in limited playing time, hitting .357/.448 w/6 XBH, 3 HR, 17 RBI. The biggest surprise has to be Jhon Imbert, who is having a breakout year slashing, .344/.476 w/6 XBH, 4 HR and 16 RBI.

The NYY Bombers on the other hand go 0-4 last week and drop to 6th in the division. The Bombers continue to deal with pitching issues, as they give up 40 runs over the 4 games this week. The team struggles on days Chalniel Arias or Mariano Salomon aren’t on the mound. In a positive sign, Omar Gonzalez’s last outing was more of what has been expected of him which will help out the rotation. The Bombers team need the middle relief corps to step up and hold the opposition while the offense works. Alejandro Gomez has been a workhouse for this team in that department, but in his last outing the opposition finally got to him. Michael Peres could be someone who steps into this role as he has done well at times when called. Peres generates a lot of strikeouts, but he also walks his fair share of hitters. For the Bombers to get back into playoff contention they’ll need to figure this out.
On the offense, after missing a week Gabriel Terrero returned. He’s been one of the best players in the DSL and provided the Bombers with an explosive leadoff hitter capable of wreaking havoc on the bases. Terrero has put together a great rookie campaign, hitting .368/.446 w/6 XBH, 4 HR, 17 RBI and 9 SB. Geyber Blanco has been a nice option at the bottom of the lineup, and after Terrero is the Bombers most consistent hitter. Blanco is hitting .317/.394 with 7 XBH and 6 RBI.
