With the World Series over, teams across Major League Baseball are beginning to take care of off-season business and make decisions regarding exercising player-options, evaluating free agency, etc. The Yankees handled their first piece of off-season business on Thursday by exercising left-handed pitcher, Zack Britton’s option through 2022.
Britton’s contract had a clause that required the Yankees to pick up his $14 million option through 2022. Had the Yankees decided to not exercise the option, Britton would have been able to elect free agency and forgo his $13 million salary for 2021.
Britton (32), who has been with the Yankees since 2018 (acquired from Baltimore), was 1-2 in 2020, with 16 strikeouts and a 1.89 ERA over 19 innings pitched in the regular season. He was 0-0, with seven strikeouts over 5.1 innings pitched in the 2020 postseason. Britton will turn 33 in December.
