Williams: How fun is this Yankees team so far?

Admit it, you were mad at the lack of the off season big splash signing. You wanted Carlos Correa. Trevor Story. Freddie Freeman or (like me) Matt Olson. You wondered if GM Brian Cashman was out of minutes on a Tracphone.

And today, like me, you were wrong. Because this team is a blast to watch! The should’ve-been-extended Aaron Judge is the early clubhouse leader for AL MVP. Giancarlo Stanton has home runs that haven’t landed yet. Gleyber Torres is turning around his career after a pair of subpar seasons. Gerrit Cole is the best pitcher on the planet not named Nestor Cortes.

They are owners of the best record in baseball at 24-8, 4.5 games ahead of recent arch nemesis Tampa Bay. Boston is DFL and irrelevant. I love that.

Luis Severino (2-0) is looking like the ace we thought he should be. And how awesome was it when he gave Yankees Manager Aaron Boone the stop sign the other day? It wasn’t quite HOFer Mike Mussina telling HOFer Joe Torre to stay in the dugout, but it’s close. As Lou Brown said in Major League, this is my kind of team Charlie. My kind of team, indeed.

How about the bullpen? Michael King is doing his best setup man Mariano Rivera impression. When that guy comes into the game, it’s just about over. 11 games, 22.2 IP, 31 K, (12.9 k/9!) 0.93 WHIP and 1.59 ERA. Good luck. Clay Holmes and old friend Aroldis Chapman slam the door closed just about every chance they get. Chapman’s been a little skittish, but he still throws 100 mph and has a 0.79 ERA in 11.1 IP.

This team is an absolute blast to watch. Now Cashman needs to hand Judge a blank check, name him captain and ride this wave down the Canyon of Heroes in October.
