ERIE, PA — The Trenton Thunder mounted a valiant comeback in Game 2 of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Erie SeaWolves, but the effort fell just short, resulting in a split.
The Thunder bats provided enough offense in the first game for a 5-3 victory, but timely hitting was hard to come by in the second game at Jerry Uht Park which finished in a 3-2 loss. Sunday’s results moved the Thunder to 3-1 on the season after they had taken Friday and Saturday’s games by a total of 24-5.
In both games, the Thunder fell behind 1-0 in the early stages before drawing even. In the first game, Trenton used a pair of runs in the top of the 4th inning to take the lead before Erie tied it in the bottom half of the inning. The Thunder then used a go-ahead single by Mason Williams in the 5th to take the lead back, and an insurance RBI double by Williams and an eventual run from him to pull away for a 5-3 victory.
Even in the Game 2 loss, Williams and Jake Cave both hit safely and are the two Thunder batters to have recorded a hit in all four games. Cave continued his torrid start to the season in Sunday’s doubleheader by going 3-for-6 with a pair of walks which remarkably lowered his batting average to .533 (8-for-15) and raised his on-base percentage to .650 (13-for-20).
The Thunder next play Monday night at Canal Park against the Akron Rubberducks. No. 1 prospect in the Yankees organization, RHP Luis Severino, is expected to start for the Thunder in his 2015 season debut. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. with the Trenton Thunder Pre-Game Show beginning at 6:20. Coverage can be heard on 91.3 FM WTSR or on www.trentonthunder.com.
