Top International Signees Highlight DSL Yankees Roster

Today is opening day for the Dominican Summer League Yankees and with that, the roster has been released. Some big names will be playing for the Yankees rookie-level affiliate.

Top international free agents from the 2018 class, including Kevin Alcantara, Alexander Vargas, and Antonio Gomez.  All three will be making their professional debuts.

Gomez, 17, signed with the Yankees for $600,000. The Venezuelan catcher projects to have an above-average throwing arm and strong defensive skills according to MLB Pipeline.

The Yankees signed the 16-year-old Alcantara for a $1 million signing bonus and he has the potential to become a five-tool player.  “I can use the whole field,” he told Pinstriped Prospects in November 2018, “I have gap power, and can make contact consistently.”

Vargas, 17, was signed for a $2.5 million signing bonus; receiving the third-largest signing bonus among the infield prospects in the international free agent class.

The DSL Yankees roster features 18 active pitchers, five catchers, six infielders, and six outfielders.  They will be beginning the season with one outfielder and five pitchers on the injured list.

Canoabo Cosme is leading the team once again as manager, with Edwin Moreno as pitching coach, Selwyn Langaigne as Hitting Coach, and Brian Reyes as defensive coach.
