CHARLESTON, SC – The New York Yankees have announced that RHP Daris Vargas has been called up to Charleston from extended Spring Training and joins the RiverDogs active roster. In an accompanying move, RHP Will Carter has been placed on the seven-day disabled list to make room for Vargas.
Vargas returns to Charleston after making two appearances with the club in 2015 after starting the season with the Gulf Coast League Yankees in rookie ball. The Azua, Dominican Republic native went 3-5 with a 3.26 ERA with 45 strikeouts and 18 walks in 60.2 innings primarily as a starter in 2015 overall. He made two starts with the RiverDogs after a late season call up to end his first season stateside. With Charleston, Vargas allowed eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits while walking seven and striking out three over 9.2 innings.
Vargas originally signed with Texas Rangers as an undrafted free agent in 2012 at the age of 20. He was released after just one season in the Dominican Summer League where he allowed two runs on three hits in 4.2 innings before his release on May 31. The Yankees promptly signed the promising righty free agent the next day. Vargas spent the next two seasons in the D.R. as a member of the Yankees where he went 7-8 with a 3.55 ERA.
The 23-year-old right hander joins the RiverDogs as they head out for their first road trip of the season to take on the Augusta GreenJackets on Opening Night at Lake Olmstead Stadium at 7:05pm on Thursday night. The RiverDogs will send LHP Josh Rogers (0-1, 5.40) to the hill while the GreenJackets will counter with RHP Phil Bickford (0-1, 5.79).
