MANCHESTER, NH – Two-out runs were the difference for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats offense as the Trenton Thunder fell 8-3 at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium Monday night.The game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the third inning, with Thunder starting pitcher Taylor Garrison on the mound.
The righty had runners on first and third base, but allowed consecutive doubles to Ryan Schimpf and Melky Mesa for a 3-0 New Hampshire lead. The following inning, New Hampshire added a pair more runs on a two-run, two-out double to Dwight Smith Jr. to make it 5-1 New Hampshire. From there, Mesa added a solo homer leading off the 6th inning to widen the margin even further off Garrison.
Garrison had allowed just three earned runs in 14.2 innings entering Monday’s start (1.88 ERA), but was touched for six earned runs in five innings against the Fisher Cats on seven hits and three walks. His record drops to 1-1 on the season and ERA climbs to 4.19.
Yankees INF/OF Jose Pirela rehabbed with the Thunder Monday night and went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts. Pirela suffered a concussion March 22 in a Spring Training game against the New York Mets, and was in his second affiliated rehab game following Sunday afternoon’s 0-for-4 with the Tampa Yankees. He was the DH in Sunday’s game, but played all nine innings in the field for the Thunder Monday and batted second in Manager Al Pedrique’s lineup.
Trenton and New Hampshire logged nine hits each, but the Thunder were unable to produce with runners in scoring position as often as the Fisher Cats who were 4-for-10 in that situation. Trenton’s offense was paced by Dante Bichette Jr. who collected three hits and improved his average to .273 on the season.
Mason Williams also had a multi-hit night with a pair of singles out of the seventh spot in the batting order. He is 5-for-14 (.357 AVG) on the current road trip with five walks (.526 OBP).The Thunder return to action Tuesday night against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
LHP Caleb Smith (1-2, 6.35) gets the start for the Thunder, and he will be opposed by RHP Michael Lee (0-1, 3.57) for the Fisher Cats. First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. with a 5:20 p.m. pre-game show on the Trenton Thunder Radio Network.
