In the deal that sent Carlos Beltran to the Texas Rangers, the New York Yankees received a package of Dillon Tate, Erik Swanson, and Nick Green. The news first reported by Ken Rosenthal with Jack Curry following up with Swanson and Green being in the deal.
But who is Nick Green? Green, 21, was the Texas Rangers 7th round draft pick out of Indian Hills Community College in 2014. But he was no strangers to the Bronx Bombers, as the Yankees drafted him the previous year in the 35th round of the 2013 draft. While at Indian Hills he pitched a no-hitter on May 4 vs. Marshalltown Community College.
Green went on to make his professional debut in 2014 with the Arizona League Rangers where he owned a 4-3 record and a 3.83 ERA in 14 games, five starts. Over 42 1/3 innings pitched he struck out 32 batters, walked 18 and limited hitters to just a .193 batting average against.
Last season he earned a promotion to the Spokane Indians of the Northwest League, the Rangers Class A Short Season affiliate. There he struggled, going 0-3 with a 7.11 ERA over ten games, nine starts, and striking out just nine batters in 31 2/3 innings. In 2016 he returned to Spokane and has bounced back with a 2-2 record, 4.98 ERA but 44 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings pitched while walking 14.
Green will head to the Staten Island Yankees of the New York-Penn League. There he will showcase his fastball in front of Yankees coaches for the first time.
