Wotherspoon’s Spot Start Hits Snags

TRENTON, NJ  The visitors took the game’s first lead in the top of the first inning when Roman Quinn scored on a double play ground out against RHP Matt Wotherspoon.

Wotherspoon, making a spot start, surrendered five runs in the top of the third inning. With one out, Quinn and Angelo Mora walked and Rhys Hoskins scored Quinn with a double to center. After Dylan Cozens followed with an RBI single, Jake Fox smacked an opposite field three-run home run to take a commanding 6-0 advantage for the Fightin Phils.

The right-hander, Wotherspoon, took his first loss of the season. He allowed five hits, three walks and did not strike out a batter. It was the first time in ten appearances between the Thunder and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre that he didn’t strike out a batter.

Caleb Smith, Matt Tracy and Alex Smith delivered a strong effort out of the bullpen holding Reading to just nine baserunners and one run over the final six innings. Tracy struck out five batters in his three innings of work.

The Thunder grabbed their first run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Dustin Fowler led off with a double off the wall in center and later scored on Lane Adams’ groundout. In the ninth inning, the Thunder loaded the bases with nobody out, but, managed only one run.

Fowler and Wade each turned in strong series’ against Reading. They combined to go 12-for-34 (.353) with three runs scored, a double, one walk and two RBI’s.

Your Thunder will have the day off on Monday and open a three-game series with the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Tuesday. LHP Jordan Montgomery will start for the Thunder, RHP Kyle Crick will go for the Flying Squirrels. Tuesday is MLB Network Night with a special appearance from former major leaguer, Mark DeRosa.
