Yankees Announce 2020 Dominican Summer League Staff

The Dominican Summer League Yankees are the Yankees foreign rookie-level team that plays out of the Yankees Latin Beisbol Academy in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.  This season the DSL Yankees will be led by a new manager but a familiar face to Yankees minor league fans.

Rainiero Coa will manage the DSL Yankees in 2020, making his managerial debut after spending the last four seasons as a coach at the rookie-level including stints as the defensive coach (2016) and catching coach (2017-2018) for the DSL Yankees, as well as a defensive coach for the GCL Yankees (2019).  Coa played in the Yankees organization for six seasons after being signed as an international free agent in 2010.  He reached as high as Class-A Charleston in 2015.

Gabriel Tatis and Edwar Ramirez return in 2020 to act as pitching coaches for the DSL Yankees.  They will also be joined by Brett DeGagne, who will be making his debut in the Yankees organization after serving as the pitching coach at North Iowa Area Community College from 2018-2019.  DeGagne also served as the pitching coach for the Bismarck Larks of the collegiate Northwoods League in 2018 as well as for St. Cloud State University from 2016-2018.

Tatis is entering his seventh season as a coach in the Yankees organization.  He spent the 2019 season as a coach with the GCL Yankees West after spending his first five seasons, the pitching coach for the DSL Yankees.  Before coaching, he played five seasons in the organization, reaching as high as Class-A Charleston.

Ramirez will be entering his second season as a coach in the DSL for the Yankees.  Fans will remember him from his time in the major leagues where he appeared in 103 MLB games, including a stint with the Yankees from 2007-2009 and the Oakland A’s in 2020.

The DSL Yankees will also have three hitting coaches in 2020, with Edwin Beard, Selwyn Langaigne, and Ari Adut serving as the hitting coaches at the Dominican Complex this year.

Langaigne is entering his third season as a hitting coach for the DSL Yankees after making his coaching debut in 2017 with the DSL Mariners.  He played seven seasons in the minors as part of the Blue Jays and Twins organization.

Beard will be entering his seventh season as a coach in the Yankees organization, all seven with the DSL Yankees.  He previously played three seasons with the DSL Yankees from 2008-2010.

Adut joins the Yankees organization after spending the last five seasons as an assistant coach and strength and conditioning coach at Los Angeles Valley College. E previously played baseball in the Pecos League in 2015 and 2016 as an outfielder.

This season the DSL Yankees will also have five defensive coaches in the persons of Carlos Mota, Oscar Escobar, Carlos Vidal, Victor Rey, and Brian Reyes.

Mota will be entering his fourth season as a defensive coach with the DSL Yankees and his 19th total season as a coach in the Yankees organization.

The 2020 season will be the fourth season in the Yankees organization for Oscar Escobar, who previously managed the DSL parallel program from 2018-2019.  He also coached Team Venezuela in the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Class.

Vidal is entering his second season as a coach with the Yankees organization and his second as a defensive coach in the DSL.  He previously played five seasons in the organization as an outfielder, reaching as high as Class-A Charleston.

Rey will be entering his second season as a defensive coach for the Yankees in the Dominican Summer League after playing six seasons in the organization as a catcher.

Brain Reyes returns for his third season in the organization as a defensive coach for the DSL Yankees.  Before coaching, he played five seasons in the Yankees system as a catcher, reaching as high as Short-Season Staten Island.
