Staten Island, NY– The game of baseball is never over until the last team has been put down one-two-three in their part of the inning. The Yankees took this to heart and played a ten inning ball game on Monday night beating the Wild Card leading Cyclones, 2-1.
The Yankees and Cyclones put up terrific pitching performances from their starters Ty Hensley and Alberto Baldonado. Both only surrendered one run and combined pitched seven innings of work in this matchup.
Staten Islands bullpen would take it from there throwing seven shutout innings to backup Hensley’s three innings of work against the Cyclones. The bullpen managed to strike out ten while surrendering only four hits.
The Cyclones bullpen had been nearly as perfect until the Bottom of the Tenth inning. Brad Wieck was called in from the ‘pen for Brooklyn to work the extra frame. Wieck started off well striking out the first two batters that he faced before surrendering the game winning walk off homer to Chris Breen.
While this game was focused on pitching there was also some running scoring, although it all happened in one inning. Michael Contorto singled home Brooklyn’s only run of the game in the Top of the Third to give them a one to nothing lead. Staten Island would respond back in the bottom of the frame by scoring on a wild pitch by Brooklyn starter Alberto Baldonado.
The win by Staten Island gives them a three game winning streak and more importantly allows the team to gain a game on the Cyclones in the race for the NY-Penn League Wild Card. After this game the Cyclones now only hold a slim two and a half game lead on the Yankees.
