Three Yankees prospects have found themselves among the rosters of the Mexican Winter League teams and are doing well early in the season. Pitcher Giovanny Gallegos and outfielder Jose Augusto Figueroa are playing for the Yaquis de Obregon while pitcher Luis Niebla is with the Caneros de los Mochis.
Niebla was originally signed out of the Mexican League in 2011 by the Yankees and has reached as high as the Charleston RiverDogs. So far this winter league season he has started one game and allowed just one run for a 2.35 ERA with just two hits and walk against him while striking out six.
Giovanny Gallegos who has worked primarily as a reliever in 2014 for the Charleston RiverDogs continues to work out of the bullpen in the winter league. Gallegos has appeared in two games not allowing a hit or a walk as of yet but struck out three batters.
Jose Augusto Figueroa finished his second season of baseball in the United States with the Gulf Coast Yankees after signing as a free agent in Jan 2011. He spent 2011 and 2012 in the Dominican Summer League playing for the DSL Yankees. In three games this winter league season he has just one hit and one run scored in five at bats.
