2023 MLB Draft

Yankees select SS/2B George Lombard, Jr. in the 1st Round of the 2023 MLB Draft

The Yankees snag another name tied to Vandy in the 1st round as they choose middle infielder George Lombard, Jr. as the 26th overall selection.

This draft selection follows going with OF Spencer Jones in 2022. Lombard, Jr., like Jones, has power as the standout feature, with his power and arm being rated as above-average, and his hit, run and field tools all scouted as average.

Lombard, Jr. is a 6-foot-3, 190 lb. righty with lots of room for muscle. He may move to 2B but has also shown versatility to move to 3B given the arm. If the name sounds familiar, his father played Major League Baseball for the Braves, Tigers, Devil Rays and Nationals. and is currently the Tigers’ bench coach.

Look for Lombard, Jr. to stand out for his defense and power. He could draw similar comparisons on defense to 2021 1st rounder, Trey Sweeney, on defense.

Lombard, Jr. has a very relaxed stance in the box with a swing that moves easily and is very quick to get out of the box. A concern is his plate discipline from the above video, but that’s something that can be worked on.
